how greatly does this improve your chances at getting into emerson? I’ve heard that at places like NYU it dramatically improves your chances, so im just curious

At Emerson, it does not really increase your chances. NYU had Early Decision which is different. The admit rate at NYU is higher in the Early round than in the RD round.

For Emerson's BFA program in MT, they took very few in the Early Action round (the adcoms told me directly) as they did not want to fill the class as they only have about 20-25 slots and wanted to wait to see more of the applicant pool. They took less than a handful and then deferred a small number to April. My D knows two kids admitted in Early action last year there, but there were likely a couple others. She was in what the adcoms said was a small pile who were admitted to the college but deferred for the BFA. Ultimately she was denied. Applying EA to Emerson has as its main benefit, possibly finding out early but it is not really an "advantage" otherwise. At NYU, applying Early Decision is a binding commitment and there is a higher rate of admissions than in the RD round. However, many get in during the RD round, as my D did.

oh okay, thank you so much for clearing that up.

i went to emerson's open house and the admissions counselors said that they accept about 54% in the early action round.

for MT? or all together?

That definitely is NOT for the MT in BFA program. Talking of Emerson itself (the college, not the BFA program), their admissions rate is 48%. So, if they admit 54% in the early action round, that is only SLIGHTLY a higher admit rate than in RD. It makes sense as Early Action is NOT Early Decision. It is not a commitment to attend. It is not binding. So, Early Action lets kids know early but is not a big advantage to the college. In Early Decision, the college knows that who they admit early WILL attend and that it is their first choice school and thus the higher admit rate in the early round. So, is Early Action an advantage for REGULAR Emerson applicants? Not a real lot.

For MT applicants? not really....less than 5 get in early, I believe, to the BFA in MT Program.....but what it does is lets some know early and then some know they are OUT early (might help to know and plan accordingly) but some know they are still in the pot via deferral and some might get what happened to my D, which is admitted to Emerson but deferred for a BFA....was told that was a small amount as well.

Make sure when you look at admissions rates in guidebooks or at info. sessions for a college, that you realize they are talking of the COLLEGE, not necessarily the BFA program. For example, the BFA in MT at Penn State admits about 5%....but the admit rate to Penn State (the University) is 55%.

D's friend also applied EA to Emerson last year. Was also deferred and the rejected. Ended up getting in at NYU, Syracuse and Elon and is now attending Elon. She also said she heard very few make it through the EA with an acceptance.

Kaysmom, that's interesting to hear about your D's friend. While this is not really on the topic of Early Action, I think one thing students may want to realize is how competitive ALL the schools are, not just the so called "top schools." You just related how this girl got into NYU and Syracuse but not Emerson. My D also got into NYU, Syracuse, BOCO, Ithaca but not Emerson (for the BFA part). Another friend who got into NYU and UMich, did not get into Emerson. Yet two friends from our region are at Emerson but did not get into any of those supposedly "harder" schools to get into. So, don't count on anything....it's hard to predict!

interested to know where your daughter ended up and was that the best choice?

Shelli...your post #9 is asking me about my daughter? I'm gathering that is the case as I was the last poster on ths thread but I posted almost ten months ago.

My daughter attends NYU/Tisch/CAP21. You asked if it was the "best" choice. It was her favorite and in that way the best choice for her, which doesn't mean it is the best school for everyone. This school fit her personal criteria the closest. However, she made sure to create a list of schools where she liked every school on her list enough to attend, even if some were more favored than others. She could have been happy at any of them and gotten a great education and training in MT. She was lucky to have several choices, the way it turned out. But as much as you can pick and plan favorites, it is a very selective and often unpredictable process, so it is important to like many schools.

She is now in her second year at Tisch/CAP21 and absolutely loves it. That's all that matters, don't ya think?

Something that I found to be odd about Emerson was the way that applicants were required to audition for the BFA OR BA Theatre Program - At other places, if you are not admitted as a BFA candidate, you will automatically be considered for the BA program. At Emerson, though, students are not considered for the BA Theatre Program (Acting Major) if they audition for the BFA Theatre Program. They have to choose to audition for one or the other upfront (same auditors, same criteria). At the NYC Unifieds, the Emerson representative spoke to a huge room of applicants about this and many were more confused after he spoke than before he spoke. It does seem like a great program, but I think its popularity has grown and the audition experience needs to be tightened and adjusted because there were so many kids and it just didn't feel as organized as I wish it had. My kid got so confused that he ended up deciding to go for the BA in Theatre (the rep painted a very wonderful picture of that option) and then when he was admitted for that ended up opting for a BFA elsewhere...The admissions person we spoke to said auditioning in Boston is a better experience. We loved the Unifieds in general, but this is the one school that I think possibly has a better audition opportunity on campus.

Babar, you are right...this is one of the few schools I've seen that allow you to only audition for one option only and if you don't get that option, you are not considered for the others. This especially rings true, as you say, for BFA candidates who do not get into the BFA, they are not considered for the BA in Thater Performance (Acting concentration), which is a different audition and you can only audition for one. You can be denied for the BFA and get into Emerson itself, which is what happened to my kid (admitted to Emerson EA, deferred for BFA in MT, denied BFA in April).

The on campus audition was OK but not one of the better situations (having now seen 8 on campus BFA auditions). It was organized OK but there was NO presentation at all, especially for parents. There was a waiting room for parents. So, nothing was learned about the program itself. My D said the dance audition was the most simplistic one of any school she auditioned at and that kids with no dance background could easily do it. The rooms where they sang and acted, she said, were very small and so it was all very up close, unlike at other schools.

For an Acting kid, (Not MT), it is too bad that those going for BFA in Acting can't be considered for the audition based BA in Acting.

I've learned to not judge a program by its tours, info. sessions, or auditions, however. But they do contrast! It is the program that counts so ya always gotta look beyond these "impressions".

Flight arrangements all set for the Emerson audition..now just need a recommendation on a nice hotel (not too pricey) near campus....any ideas?

Thank you!

Does anyone know if the Emerson early admission decisions are posted online or emailed? Or are they sent through snail mail....

Don't know if there is a way to check Emerson's decision online, but I heard that letters will start being sent on Friday! Best of Luck to you!

EA decisions cannot be accessed online, I e-mailed and asked them. They said something about confidentiality...who knows! Good luck!

Emerson's EA decisions are being mailed out this week and have been received by some as early as today (and even by some who didn't apply EA but whose academic admission has been decided EA with the decision on their major still pending an audition). Good luck to all who applied EA.
