Early Action

This is what I have heard from friends. It also would allow for a re-visit should one be undecided between two or three schools. I know a young man who revisited all of the schools that he was accepted to. He would not decide which one he would go to until he had done that. He chose a school that was a rolling decision school. None of these schools were top tier, and thankfully none were on the other side of the country for him :). Even the rd schools let him know by Thanksgiving, which suprised me, but mom is very on top of things, had been through this before, and everything was submitted by the end of September.

Do you think there are any advantages in getting RD applications in early--from the point of view of likely acceptance? Would it be risky to wait for an ED decision before sending off the RD apps?

I think there are advantages at many schools to getting RD applications in early. Basically it is an early sign of interest in the college, and also puts the application at the head of the pile - that is, the ad coms are likely to review the files in the order of completion. If there are 10,000 applicants, do you really want to be the 9,999th file the ad com sees?

I don't think it is a tangible or hard benefit - that is, it doesn't guarantee a better chance. It's just one of those things that tends to work toward the students advantage.

I would note that many colleges have "priority", early filing dates for RD for anyone wanting consideration for merit scholarships.

I think it might even be a little stronger than that. If the class the adcom are trying to built is looking for some kids from your state and who have a EC background like yours I'd think that solid but not star early arriving applications may get accpeted RD with those attributes while the same application arriving late in the process may have a tougher time because they already have filled slots with other similar kids who were accepted earlier in the RD process.

Marite, thank you so much for the great info. I have been asking myself those questions for the past couple of days, so it helps to see it all in black and white.

NJres, I hope my D does the same thing your S did and gets it over with early.
