Early Decision applications are up 8% from last year at Barnard despite economy

Not like we ed’ers need more things to get nervous about, but I just read that they had an increase this year from 392 to like 423 this year if i’m not mistaken and admissions this year is most competitive.

Here’s the article
[How I Got Into College: 6 Stories - WSJ.com](<a href=“Students Offer College Admissions Tips - WSJ”>Students Offer College Admissions Tips - WSJ)

BUT, I guess it is all in their hands now so the best we can all do now is to just wait!!

That is a very good article. Interesting that early apps are still increasing even in view of the economic situation going on now....

I just read that too!

It's not that bad. I just did the math (I hope it's right):

432 ED apps last year (according to data book) x .08 = 34.56

So there were only 35 more applicants this year than last.

It's not too terribly bad...although I'd rather it not be that way.

It's better than Wesleyan where I've heard ED apps are up 40%. 8% hopefully shouldn't impact results too much.

Okay well let's consider this....Barnard has a REALLY low endowment.
So.. an 8% increase, as someone has already said, is only 34.5 students. and we'll just round that up to 35 because i doubt there'll be a half wandering around campus.
Is it not in Barnard's best interest to perhaps increase their ED acceptance rate this year given the failing economy?
More students=more donations and more from tuition.

I dunno. Maybe I'm just trying not to freak myself out here.

You could also argue that more students = strained resources. I don't think they'll increase acceptances significantly, but I also don't think they'll decrease significantly.

Whatever year's stats Collegeboard has up (I'd guess ED 2006, for Barnard class of 2011) say that 432 applied and 181 were accepted (41.8%). Based on that, I'd say the increase is just natural fluctuation and the acceptance rate should stay pretty constant.
