I absolutely love Rice and know that it is by far my #1 choice. However, my GPA is currently on the low side for Rice (3.65). Aside from that, I am a relatively competitive applicant. If I apply at the regular deadline, then my GPA will go up from my 1st semester grades (around 3.7). Basically, my question is: Is the advantage I get from applying ED outweighed by the fact that my grades could still improve.

I am in the exact same predicament as you (except not with Rice). I’ve decided that applying ED does in fact outweigh it; however, that is because my 1st quarter grades will be out by then and seen by my ED school. Even though 1st quarter grades do not change my GPA, I figure the colleges will see that the improvement is there. I’d assume your school does something similar that can be sent. Also check out Rice’s ED vs RD acceptance rate. If it is significantly higher on ED then that also answers your question. I doubt a 3.65 vs 3.7 would impact Rice’s decision (I’m hoping).

Yeah. That’s what I was thinking but I’m not sure. Rice’s ED Rate is about 10% higher. Last year they filled about a third of the class with ED Acceptances.

I don’t think the ED advantage is that great, most of the students that apply ED are legacies, athletes, and on average just overall stronger students than the RD applicants. I’d apply RD so they see your higher GPA.

OP - what are your test scores? If those are outstanding, then perhaps those could override any issues with your GPA. You really haven’t given enough info for us to help you with the ED decision. ED is binding.

ED tends to be successful for particularly strong students or for those with particular hooks.
