Our D has decided that UR is her number one choice and wants to apply early decision. There are two ED deadlines. Any advice/insights on the differences between the two? First, does UR set a "number to take" (target number) for each ED round? Is it possible that there would be less "places" in ED II? Second, wouldn't it be better to wait and apply ED II when she has completed her first semester and has her grades (which are, hopefully, all good!)? Any other considerations? We are trying to provide some guidance and have not yet spoken to her GC about this (we have our apptmt in two weeks). Thanks!

These are all good questions. There is not much difference between the two ED rounds. We typically aim for the same profile of student. The downside to the Winter round is that the student still has to file applications to other schools because she won't have heard from us early enough to avoid doing so. Since I consider one of the primary benefits of ED to be the simplicity of sending in only one application, the winter round loses this benefit all together. There are not target numbers for each round--we'd like to enroll as many as we can in each round without a reduction in the quality of the student profile. The fall ED pool tends to be larger than the winter pool. In both rounds of ED, we require only that students send us their first marking period grades since even by late January some schools have not posted first semester grades. Your student would be able to have first marking period grades in to us in November so if she is sure at this stage of the process that ED is the way to go, I would encourage her to go with Fall.

Let us know if you have other questions at any point. We look forward to working with your family!

Thank you. All good points. She is looking forward to spending a day in classes at UR and I imagine that day will spark her enthusiasm even more! Looking forward to working with you.

I'm in the same boat... thanks for the info
