Thoughts?

They are trying to game the system. They think with high standardized testing averages US News will finally move them up. A good strategy to use for all colleges looking to move up.

I don’t think they’re gaming the system. I think they are getting more/stronger applicants which naturally drives up the stats.

Students with high test scores and elite EC’s apply to several U’s and have many options. Over the past 10 years more and more of these students are electing to attend Vanderbilt. The question is why are todays academic top guns electing to attend Vanderbilt? There are many answers to that question but there is no question Vanderbilt is a hot university with elite high school graduates.

Where did you find the 2015 ED stats?

It’s probably posted on the OUA site as well, but here are the ED stats as released to The Hustler.

http://www.vanderbilthustler.com/news/article_d0956b3e-abef-11e4-b334-77ac9d274ff5.html

I was surprised to see the ACT 25th percentile jump to a 33 after seeing how many students in the ED1 thread got in with a 32. (Albeit CC is a small group of applicants.) I’m curious to see if the overall scores will go up as well.

Does anyone know how many applied?

Last year, Vandy’s incoming class had the 7th highest SAT/ACT scores in the US (Forbes). They were higher than 5 of the 8 Ivy schools and higher than Stanford, Northwestern, JHU, & Duke. This years class may top HPY. In addition to those scores 100% of incoming freshman held major leadership positions or received major awards. Vanderbilt is now a reach university for everyone.

That’s true. Although its prestige remains mainly only regional from my experience.

Other than 4-5 universities prestige will vary from region to region. In any ranking system you look at and on main street Vanderbilt is a 1 percenter when it comes to prestige in any region. Prestige is a funny thing on main street. On main street most have not heard of Cal-tech, think WashSL is in Seattle, mix up UPENN and Penn State, think NDU and USC are football schools, Duke is a basketball school, have no idea where Rice is, can’t name any top LAC’s, and think John Thompson is still coaching at Georgetown…wait I think his son is.
As for Vandy’s geographic diversity, outside TN the best represented states are:

  1. IL
  2. NY
  3. TX
  4. FL
  5. CA
