@cappex Besides the stunning location, they are a very athletics oriented school for a DIII college. They also have a major that really appeals to me: Environment, Economics, and Politics. After researching, I found that CMC isn’t for everyone, but I knew I would enjoy it there.
@JSPHHAN I have a D who is a freshman at Pomona. She was a debater including a 2x national and TOC qualifier. She also had very high stats. She was admitted to Pomona ED1. CMC was a very close 2nd choice for her.
@Corinthian That’s super cool! I plan to make a second run at nationals with a goal at top 32 in International Extemporaneous. Our school is getting a bit more funding this year, so we’re competing at Stanford in January! I’ve never actually received a TOC bid, so it’s awesome to hear that your D was a qualifier!
@jsphhan, You sound like an amazing young person! I am sure you will succeed regardless of the school you attend! From the statistics I have read, your chances are substantially higher applying ED1. Even when you account for the athletes and legacies being “front loaded”, you chances are better. In the event you are interviewed by a an alumnus or student, perhaps you could write a brief email note to your Admissions reader (not sure where you are from…) letting them know of your enthusiasm for the school and perhaps reiterating your debating story. It is very compelling and you can speak to your competitive spirit and nature. Since CMC has a decided business bent, that may be a factor that the reader can highlight when your application is brought before the Admissions Committee.
Best of luck, and have my fingers crossed for you until December 15th. Please let us know the outcome!
@CallieMom Thanks for the input! I’ll definitely give the admissions officer an email!
There’s nothing wrong with bragging about yourself in your app. As long as you can make your ECs seem as great as you feel about them i think you have a good chance of getting in.
3.8 is a perfectly acceptable GPA, you would be surprised how much they consider your essays, etc
I don’t understand how anyone could say you have no chance of getting in, i think you are a very competitive applicant
Regardless you will get into a great school; Good Luck!
@PaulDi Thanks for the feedback! I did struggle on my applications, trying not to brag all too much. I guess I should try to show off a bit more. I do hope to get into Claremont McKenna; it seems like an awesome place to stay for 4 years!
@JSPHHAN Not sure why i did not apply their as a High School student (not that i don’t love Cornell), but it literally looks like a paradise at Claremont Mckenna
@pauldi @jsphhan @calliemom @corinthian Hey you all seemed to have knowledge on the 5 C’s, so I ask. I have been interested in schools with open curriculums, (CS major, don’t want too many hard math courses because i need a good GPA for law school) and I came across Pitzer. I think I could get in 31 ACT and 4.2 GPA, but is it comparable to Claremont, Harvey, and Pomona? (Places i stand a chance…)
@cappex you should probably start your own thread for this. Just fyi, I don’t think Pitzer has a CS major so you’d need to do an “off campus” major. Pitzer is also test optional and looking for fit, so starting off with an off campus major would seem to lower your chances, in my opinion. But I think your GPA and ACT are fine for Pitzer.
@Corinthian Dang, same problem as Tulane and Reed! I like schools with open curriculum, how about Vassar and Colgate?
@cappex If you’re looking for recommendations of colleges, go to the College Search and Selection board and start a new thread describing what you’re looking for. I’m sure you’ll get lots of help. If you want to be chanced, start you’re own thread here on the What Are My Chances board. But you’re kinda hijacking the OP’s thread right now.
