Earthwatch Fellowship program: deadline ahoy!

If you are a high school sophomore or junior looking for a summer program for 2012, take a look at the Earthwatch Student Fellowships program. Earthwatch will send you free of charge on a two week fieldwork expedition to places like this: Teen Teams - Earthwatch Yes, the link shows prices--you can also pay to go on these expeditions, but the student fellows go for free.

Acceptance to the program is competitive, and is based primarily on essays and teacher/counselor recommendations. You must be nominated by a teacher or counselor in order to apply. Nominations are due by October 27, so if you're interested, make sure to get the rec form in to your school as soon as possible.

The Earthwatch fellowship FAQ says "The strongest student applicants are passionate about learning, excited to embark on an adventure, and committed to engaging their communities around conservation issues when they return from their expedition. You do NOT need to have prior research experience." This is not just words--it's really how they judge their applications. My D1, with no previous research experience, was an Earthwatch Fellow several summers ago and said it was one of the best things she's ever done, both because of the work and because of her group.

I actually emailed them back in September… and spoke to someone a few days later… these fellowships are ONLY for LA county students for this next go round… we were so disappointed! They had some funding issues apparently and had to make some changtes in the way they do things…hopefully things will change for 2013!
