east coast visit

I am trying to figure out how my child can get his college visits in without missing a ton of school.
He has been accepted at two east coast schools, McDaniels in Maryland and Warren Wilson in North Carolina. We live in California.
I would like him to be able to see both of those schools in one trip. What would be the easiest way.
Thanks

Sorry--I'm too lazy to look these up....what cities are these closest to? We are driving up to College Park, MD soon, and it's about 7 and 1/2 hrs from Charlotte. Fastest would probably be to make a big loop flying, but I don't know how that will price out for you.

Warren Willson is closest to Asheville, NC There's an airport there so I hope that's some help

McDaniels suggests Baltimore and Warren Wilson Asheville. Southwest flies to Baltimore but not to Asheville.

McDaniel is about 1 hour from Balto Washington International and about 20 minutes from my house. There is a very small airpot in Frederick about 40 minutes from the college but I think it is mainly small, short commuter flights. The campus is small and if it would help I would be happy to go take pictures of it and Westminster for your son.

Oh be sure and tell us about Warren Wilson.
I love the sound of this school ( but D does not want rural---- or south)
good luck arranging your trip

A big loop flying is probably the way they will have to go. But the fares are out of this world. Alternative airport suggestions?
How long of a drive from Charlotte to Warren Wilson?

like 3 hours i guess depending on traffic

Charlotte is about 130 miles from Asheville, virtually all interstate, but traffic can be heavy--still, should not take 3 hours unless you are pretty unlucky. i think it probably makes sense to fly into Charlotte rather than Asheville, since it is a large airport--USAir hub, pretty good Continental service too. If you can get a nonstop or at least direct flight that's a lot easier than making connections. I don't know about the Maryland part of the journey but Maryland is a very small state, except for the western corner, so I'd think flying into a major airport and driving to your destination would be more convenient and faster than making connections to a small airport. I'd suggest checking mapquest to see what times and routes are if you want to drive from Asheville to McDaniel College.

Driving from Charlotte, you'll take I-77 North to I-40 West. You will get to the exit for Warren Wilson before you get to Asheville. There is a sign for the exit to Warren Wilson on I-40. It should be less than 3 hours unless you hit rush hour traffic going through Charlotte. Be sure and check out downtown Asheville if you have time.

Not easy to get to Asheville from Baltimore. It's about an 8-hour drive. Tri-Cities airport is about 1.5 hours from Asheville (a nice drive), but flights from BWI to TRI are not going to be cheap.

WOW! I just checked orbitz.com, and see that AirTran has $49 one-way tickets from BWI to Charlotte, and as a result, so does USAir. Can't beat that with a stick.

mom60, snap on that fare that dad o 2 mentioned RIGHT NOW -- you'll never see it lower.

Thanks for the tip. The expensive leg seems to be getting from Santa Barbara to Charlotte and from Baltimore to SB on the return. With anything but a 6 am return from Baltimore the price goes way up.
I did find the cost dropped by using Charlotte versus Asheville but not by much.
I am going to work on it again today
Thanks for all you help. I have absolutely no clue about that area of the country.

off topic but curious, what possessed you to apply to those schools from california?

lol, I was wondering the same thing as jags861. We live in NC and I don't hear anybody around here talking about Warren Wilson (although a friend's H did grad. from WW twenty-some years ago). Just curious...

My son went to an alternative middle school and several classmates of his have gone to Warren Wilson. He likes the idea of the work and community service requirements.
McDaniels he learned about from this board and it is in the College that changes lives book.
I am going to have a talk with him about how serious he is about either before I spend a fortune for him to visit them.

mom60 - I posted earlier that I am 20 minutes from McDaniel. Very few kids from around here go there and the reason maybe that it IS 20 minutes away. If you or your son have any questions about the area that I could answer I would be happy to send you my phone number. It is a good school but we saw lots of schools that my daughter liked when visiting in the south. She crossed a few off the list because they were just like College Y a lot closer to home. And we were only 8-10 hours from home, no where near 3000 miles away like you.

Actually, to drive from Charlotte airport to Warren Wilson I would take I85 to 321 north, then pick up I40 west in Hickory. It's about an hour from airport to Hickory, then an hour from Hickory to WW.

Hi, my DS is a 2nd semester freshman at McDaniel. He was a recruited swimmer and is now a fraternity pledge. Because of his particular situation, we've had experience with most aspects of college departments and offices. We spent a lot of time and energy looking at institutions mainly on the East Coast and in the Midwest...so we're pretty well versed and would be glad to help any families considering McDaniel.

Feel free to post or PM.

Enjoy the thrill of the hunt!
