Mary’s Marvelous Makeup has been in operation for 14 years. Mary and her late husband George opened the small business investing most of their
personal savings. George died suddenly a little over one year ago. Mary, age 55, continues to operate the business. She plans to do so until her retirement
in about ten years. Mary has four grown children who live out of state. They visit several times a year but have no plans on taking over the family
operation.
When the business first opened George and Mary prepared a lengthy business plan to secure bank financing to accompany their personal savings. Mary
managed the day-to-day operations of the store while George selected merchandise and waited on most of the customers. Mary continues to attend market
twice a year purchasing the most up-to-date merchandise for the store.
Mary’s Marvelous Makeup is located in a small community of approximately 6,300 people. The town has three major employers: a small manufacturing
plant employing 150 people, a medium-security state-operated prison employing 145 people, and a meat processing plan employing 70 people. The store
is located along the downtown city square across from the post office. The store is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. six days a week. Two big display
windows face the post office. Mary is proud of the fact that she changes the window displays promptly on the first of each month.
The store offers a wide selection of small, unique makeup products along with an assortment of tasty candies and international coffees. Mary recently
added a small assortment of silk flowers and helium balloons. A major retail chain store is located on the edge of the city next to the community’s only
supermarket. The closest real competitor for Mary is located in a shopping mall approximately 80 miles away. Two local florists offer a wide selection of
silk flower arrangements. They also deliver balloons with their floral arrangements upon request.
Regular customers know they can find the “perfect” gift if they shop at Mary’s Marvelous Makeup. As a service to her patrons, Mary will gift-wrap and
deliver anywhere in town free of charge. Local customers can charge their purchases. Currently Mary has accounts receivable of about $4,000. Customers
are served promptly since seven part-time employees rotate shifts in the store. Mary tries to keep four part-time employees working each day. Lately several
people have commented that Mary spends a lot of time in the local coffee shop about one block from the store. Mary visits the coffee shop three times each
day and always slips a few dollars out of the cash register before each trip to pay for her coffee and snacks.
Mary feels that advertising is very important to the image of the store. George used to coordinate a promotion each month. Mary just takes the easy approach
now and buys advertising from either the local newspaper or radio station – depending upon which salesperson walks through the door first each week.
As Mary opened the mail today, she received two noticed from suppliers that she is behind on her payments. Her bank note of $550 is due next week. She
only has eight more bank payments to make and her loan will be paid off, leave the store debt free except for current obligations. The part-time employees
must be paid at the end of the week. Mary looks at the business checkbook and realizes that she barely has enough money to cover the expenses this week.
She starts to worry about next week. What recommendations do you have for Mary and for the future operations of Mary’s Marvelous Makeup?

This is A detailed prompt! Any help with this or with econ issues?

C’mon Guys I need help anybody willing to help?

Set up the economic microeconomic profits curve? compare and see if she shouldc lose down her mary’s marvelous makeup store?

Do they just announce National NOVA Scholar (5 refers) later in the year? because I’m sure I completedt hat but did not get recognition yet?

anybody know?

Like I said before, make everything sound creative and you’ll be good to go.

think of some ways to present your topic creatively :)

Well for the National Nova Scholars thing I’m pretty sure they have to wait until later in the year before announcing it, cause It wouldn’t make sense to post it up now when

more people could potentially become nova scholars and then they’d have to redo their nova scholar lists…

Too Much of a hassle
easier just to do it in one go. So ya I’d say wait for a while and then you could probably get the Nova Scholar award.
Sounds pretty cool doesn’t it I was a National Nova scholar ya sounds pretty awesome to me

I also heard NOVA might be dividing the categories/winners like this:

9th grade and under:

10th grade & 11th

12th grade and above:

do you guys think that’s fair?

iono I think that it should be middle school, high school, and undergrad, It’s already like kinda divided like that. It would seem to be easiest to put those as the categories. I don’t think its fair to group 9th with middle school or 12th with undergrad.

We’ll see how they divide it up when they post the results or whenever they update their site.

Agreed, they already implement the “weighting” system into decisions so I don’t think it’s necessary… :/

Does it say somewhere about the weighting system or/…?

No, I received this from personal experience.

OK, I have another question :

Is it bad to turn in your apps early?

Has anybody turned in their submissions yet?

I’d say that you should start writing and preparing now. I mean I’m sure that they r done revising and reviewing over their prompts. I’m sure that now they r ready for apps. I’m gonna start turning in my stuff and do alot of the prompts. They never said that we shouldn’t turn in r apps early. They just said until may 31st. I’d say get a head start and do a bunch.

Submit

Already finished one :D

^ Nice, how many are you submitting
I’m working on IBII…

hey any cool ideas on products for the persuasive writing? I’m kinda stuck with thinking bout a good product to write about

@ champ7

– a product that makes people not fat.

come on, everybody loves that
