DD has had journalism freshman and sophmore year. She is thinking of taking student council for junior and senior year instead. She is wondering what colleges like better. I tell her to follow her heart. Any and all opinions greatly appreciated.

You are right. She needs to follow her heart. That's what colleges like: Students who follow their heart, and then put the time, imagination, and effort into doing well at their EC.

Most colleges don't factor ECs into admission anyway. At most, ECs are used for merit aid consideration. This particularly is true of public universities, but also is true of virtually all private universities except the top 20 or so, which get such an overabundance of high stat applicants that the colleges can afford to pick and choose from their high stat applicants the ones who'll most contribute to creating and maintaining an active campus.

I agree with you, nitnat. Colleges will want to see how she's grown over time and what's become important to her. In her case, it sounds like dropping journalism in favor of student council doesn't show lack of commitment; it shows personal growth.

completely agree that she should follow her heart. does it have to be one or the other, or could she do both? at D's school student council meets periodically (I'm not sure it even meets weekly), while journalism is a 5-day a week class for credit, with a state-approved curriculum. they do a lot more than just produce the school paper.

Thank you for the posts!
