EC’s not specific to majors?

Are there any neutral (not tuned to a career/major) EC’s that aren’t very common? I’m a rising sophomore and I have no clue what career path I want, but I’d like some activities that stand out.

Anything you find interesting and can make a positive impact with is fine.

You can make yourself stand out by getting involved in something outside of school that truly interests you. As in, not just running for treasurer and never doing anything with the “office”, or joining six clubs and doing nothing more than attending a meeting once a month.

The kids who truly care about the thing they do outside of school are the kids who stand out. So if working with the elderly is something you care about, or helping animals, or studying French for fun, are things you enjoy, take it to another level.

Read books to elderly people and volunteer to talk to them. Volunteer at a small scale animal rescue and help foster kittens. Help a French person learn English using one of these sites: 8 Best Free Language Exchange Websites

There is no magic activity that will get you noticed. Volunteering for the local library isn’t better than tight rope walking. It’s clear commitment and interest that makes the difference.

There are thousands of activities which can make you stand out… the question is- are you interested in any of them? Look at the last few Olympics- are you interested in bobsledding? curling? Watch virtually any show on HGTV- do you like to demolish homes and rehab them to flip, are you good at woodworking or decorative mural painting? Wander the aisles of a hobby shop or hardware store- furniture restoration, do-your-own upholstery, designing kites or building go-carts using recycled materials??? Visit your town’s historical society- are you interested in collecting or cataloguing ephemera? Find the closest old cemetery to your home- can you volunteer to research if there are still family members alive to do an oral history, or help restore crumbling tombstones?

Do you like birds, fish, insects, butterflies??? Stamps, coins, sugar packets from defunct restaurant and hotel chains? There are people who collect virtually anything!

Start with your interests. And if they happen to be “very common” that’s ok too!

Yes. Do something right for you. Not for the resume. Make an impact

You like pets ? Help at the shelter. Walk dogs. Clean cages. Move up to help with adoptions.

What interests you ? That’s what’s impressive.

Not what you do with no passion.
