Hi everybody, I was just admitted for Fall 2015 to the CIT at Carnegie Mellon, for all engineering majors except ECE, which I’ve heard is one of the most competitive. So I can’t major in ECE. However, since ECE does interest me some, does CMU offer a minor in the ECE department and if so would I be eligible for this minor even if I can’t do it as a major? Thanks!
No you cannot. This is the list of CIT minors.

And it is still possible to major in ECE, you just do not have a “reserved seat”. Meaning come spring it is not guaranteed that you can declare ECE. However, typically anyone who applies can get it, though it is not recommended to do it without taking the intro class of that major. At the end of the freshman year when students declare, some of those with reserved seats elect to join other departments. The intro to ECE course is a bit of a weeder. ECE is typically the largest major at Carnegie Mellon but the class that graduated 2014 actually had more MEs I believe.
Thanks!
Your ability to transfer will largely be dictated by your 1st year grades.
