DD got some information from them. Of course, like any school, they look good on paper. It looks like they have a good science program. She is leaning toward biology or chemistry with thoughts of going on to medical school. Any local opinions?

Well, with 158 views and no comments I am going to assume we should cross this off our list…

I just saw your post. My dd attended Eckerd her first two years. She liked it, didn’t love it. But she is now missing a lot of things that she took for granted. All of her professors were full professors, not TAs. The classes were small with lots of chance for interaction. She really got a chance to know her professors and the other students. Most of the students live on campus. The merit award was quite generous, and based on merit only, not need.

why did your daughter leave? we are looking at eckerd for our son who is a junior. It seems fantastic for someone who needs small classes and is really good at presenting and writing rather than filling out multiple choice tests. Any other thoughts out there?

She left because she thought she wanted a “larger” experience, more of an international presence (in the student body) and to be more in a city environment. She also wanted to be in the Pacific northwest.

But, funny thing, almost a year away from Eckerd she is realizing all she gave up. She misses the small class size, the professors (instead of TAs) and the feeling that the faculty genuinely cares about the students. She is seriously considering returning to Eckerd for her senior year.

My S is currently a junior Psychology major at Eckerd and he is considering medical school after graduation. He loves the small classes, relationships with profs, the relaxed atmosphere and the variety of activities available. The small size does have a down side in selection of profs for certain classes. For example there is only one prof who teaches organic chemistry. The new science building under construction looks to be a state of the art facility for a growing community of science majors.
S receives a very nice scholarship based on merit.
I’ve seen folks complain about the location being isolated. This has not been a problem at all. There is a public bus route that comes on to campus and there are cars available for students to borrow from the college.
If you have other questions I’d be happy to answer them.

There are CARS available to borrow? I know there are bikes that the students can use on campus, but I sure wasn’t aware of any cars.

S tells me you have to pass a test given by Student Services and you can check out a van.

I was mentioning this to my husband and he was very surprised to hear that Eckerd might be loaning cars to students. He said it would be a huge liability. I’m guessing the checking out of vans is more for school related activities and not just personal student use.

Ok, so this is probably not the input that you were actually looking for, but thought i would add anyway.

I was not a student at Eckerd, but visited a few times for different reasons. I really liked it, for a few reasons. It was not an option for me to go to, but i would have considered it for these reasons:

-It is really pretty. The campus is so peaceful, and it is nicely laid out with the water(ponds) and grass. I loved being there because it was very relaxing.

-The location is nice too. You are in St. Pete and can get to the beach and many cool Florida spots that are close by.

-It seemed like a friendly campus. With what the other poster wrote about small classes and such, i can understand why it would be attractive for that reason as well. Small classes with real teachers is something very attractive and hard to find as well.

Haven’t gone there, but my daughter is strongly considering it. We’ll visit next month. Ever since she started thinking about going there, people have been coming out of the woodwork to tell her they went there and how great it is – and really successful people. My husband’s boss, judges he practices in front of. They all loved it. My daughter needs a smaller environment, so I think this might be our best choice.

my younger son’s first choice at this moment (he’s a high school junior). We are visiting in March!
