Econ and Stat - tough it out or not?

Hi all, this coming fall I will be starting my sophomore year of undergrad. I like econ from what I've seen so far so I'm definitely majoring in it. I was going to double major with business because there's a good chance I might go for my MBA, but I heard that there's no need to major in business for that. Obviously pairing econ with math or stat would give me a more solid foundation for econ. That would also give me more postgrad options than just pursuing my MBA. Problem is, I'm not the greatest at math, so a math major is completely out of the question. What about stat though? I'm okay at applied math, but the thought of taking 2-3 math courses every semester for the rest of my college career is daunting. So my question is, how difficult is the stat major? And do you think it's worth it to tough it out so that I can have a firmer grasp on econ and have more postgrad options? And I am right in thinking that a business major is NOT needed to pursue an MBA?

One final thing, in a perfect world I would major in econ and history. Problem is, I feel like I would be shooting myself in the foot with the history part of that. Could I still pursue my MBA with that pairing? And what other career options would I have? I feel as though anything using extensive econ would be out of the question because I'd be missing the math portion.

First, it is going to be tough, and depending on the schools you go, it may be much tougher. School information will be nice for readers to give better advice.

Econ also have quite a bit of math in it, of course, that depends on the school that you go to. Certain schools are less mathematical than others are.

MBA doesn’t care what you major in, MBA does care about your GPA, GMAT, and esp work experience. Leadership positions etc… (disclaimer: never been to MBA, just read quite a lot abt it, and interaction with ppl who went to pretty good schools)

Thanks spring12 - I’m at UNC Chapel Hill right now. I never planned on doing anything mathematical until I realized I liked econ, so I’m not sure how tough our math/stat departments are. From the things I have heard, I think they are pretty difficult. The econ major itself only requires intro stat, intro algebra, and a calc class for econ (like business calc), all of which I’ve already taken. I have no problem with the math requirement for econ. Problem is, I’d like to supplement it with more math just because it seems like it’s missing something with just bare bones math.

After further thought, I’ve decided that I don’t want to ruin my college life by majoring in stat when I most likely don’t want to do anything that mathematical postgrad anyway. I’m just not that great at math. I will major in econ, and probably double minor in stat and business. The stat minor is very doable.

But I’m still not completely sure yet so I welcome anymore thoughts!

Well great… so you have identified you like econ, and you want to get to an MBA (I assume you personally want to go to a top one, hence the dilemma in choosing majors)

So, what’s left is what is your career goal? you state you don’t want to do anything mathematical… but what is it that you really want? If you know what you want to do after, you might get a better idea of what you will do in college. If not, hey not a lot of people know what they want in college so yeah.

I think minoring in stats is great, and business is great too.

I believe for a top MBA, GPA (some majors are expected to have a higher GPA I think) and GMAT matters, work experience and personal character matters a lot too.

Have a great 4 yr!
