Econ at Emory

How's the economics department at Emory? How does it rank against other comparable schools?

Also, is econ separate from the business school? I'm a h.s junior and I'm still not very familiar with how the departments at colleges are organized.

icanread, I'm a parent of an Emory student... I work in the business world, and I have an acquaintance here in California who was an Emory Econ grad. If she is any example, I can say that the Econ program at Emory is great. My personal bias is that Economics is a great major, whether you choose to apply later to the Goizueta undergraduate business program (as a junior) or not. It will give you a great preparation for the work world, if that is what you decide to do... or give an excellent foundation for an MBA program later on.

As a high school junior, the best thing you can do is to continue to apply yourself to your studies, be open to a multitude of academic opportunities, and maintain an inquiring mind. If you are like many students, your academic interests will change and evolve as you mature. Your true passion may not surface even during your undergraduate years, and the truth is that many people undergo a multitude of career changes during their lifetimes. I have a friend here in the community I live in (S.F. Bay Area), and he attended Emory for his undergraduate years back in the mid-90's, graduating with a B.S. in Biology. He later attended Cornell for Med School and also got his MBA there as well. He's now running a start-up company in biomedical devices. I think what he most appreciates about his days at Emory was it gave him the chance to discover as much as he could about himself and how he fit into the world. In reality, he's never stopped being a student of knowledge.

BTW, the Economics Department is technically a part of the Emory College, the primary undergraduate institution at Emory University. The Goizueta Business School is another institution affiliated with Emory University. The B-School offers a 2-year undergraduate business program (admission is by application for student's junior year), as well as its graduate MBA programs. There are limited faculty who teach Economics at Emory College who also teach at the Goizueta B-School.
