If you are just a normal econ major without MMSS, MENU, or a Kellogg Certificate are you screwed when it comes to ibanking and consulting internships

Normal econ majors at Northwestern do just fine. And maybe, just maybe, you'll find out there are tons of interesting jobs that aren't i-banking and consulting (and I'm a consultant myself). Don't sweat it.

Like what (not to sound like a douche, but im really clueless when it comes to jobs for econ majors).

All i know is that you can go into consulting, ibanking, and industry.

what about teaching, or working for the fed? there are so many possibilities... it's really irritating to hear 3/4 of econ students talking about ibanking and consulting. what a boring goal.

you can also work for corporations/companies in their finance departments. someone has to deal with the cost-volume-profit analysis, financing or budgeting...etc for an organization.

^ Do you think that econ majors (without those special programs) would still be competitive for IB and MC though? I'm concerned about the same thing.

And also, in terms of the Kellogg certificate, does anyone know if they would favor someone who took the honors sequences and got lower grades than someone who took the regular sequences? (Obviously, it would be ideal to be able to achieve good grades in the honors sequences.)

Most other schools don't have programs like MMSS/Kellogg cert to go with their econ and I doubt recruiters would all of a sudden have a different standard when it comes to recruiting at NU just because we have those extra programs. It's not like our econ alone is anything less than that from other schools. It is better than most others out there as far as ranking goes. Maybe if all else is equal, having MMSS+econ is better than just econ. But there's no way you can say MMSS+econ grads are all equal/better than all econ grads in things like interview skills, personality, drive to succeed..etc. If you don't get into MMSS/Kellogg cert, don't assume every MMSS/Kellogg cert grad would outcompete you. MS/IB look for much more than what your major is.

Also, I heard that MMSS courses aren't as grade-inflated. So your GPA could be lowered if you do MMSS. Again, you can't assume all else would be equal. While MMSS is a wonderful program and would likely give you an extra edge, it isn't risk free.

Thanks for the advice. I am assuming that the same may be said for the Honors Engineering Analysis courses as well.
