Econ, Psych, possible Robert Day major taking questions

Fielding any questions concerning Economics, Accounting, Finance and Psychology at Claremont Mckenna College.

How would you rate the Psych program based on quality, course variety etc...?

How good is job placement after a CMC econ degree good? Like can I work for Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs?

Not just that, but does the program offer above average psychology teaching? How large is the student body majoring in psych? Example, does the college put resources into it, or is it just put on the back burner, as CMC is obviously very government/IR oriented.

Flamedude,

CMC emphasizes on Economics and Government as subject areas. Within these programs, students enroll in various courses and create majors such as Economics-Accounting, Economics, PPE, Government, Economics-Government, Government IR and so on.

Culturally CMC has a politically active student body and focusses on entrepreneurship and leadership. The Psychology department at CMC is excellent and is no doubt an above average psychology dept. However, they tend to emphasize on organizational aspects and leadership more than clinical psychology. This does not go without saying that other areas are strong, but research opportunities are far greater in leadership study because of the Kravis Leadership Institute.
A significant number of CMC students major in Psychology. More commonly, however, a lot of students dual or double major in psychology with something else. Also, we have the Leadership sequence which is like a Psychology dual major in certain areas.
It is definitely not a back burner and is integral to CMC's mission. Also, keeping in mind the recent donation from Robert Day, the future looks bright for the Psychology department. The Day Scholars Program will merge Economics, Finance and Organizational Psychology. The faculty is experienced and our class rooms are in a round table meeting format (Like a board room). Classes are very discussion oriented and require loads of reading before hand.
If its organizational psychology you like then this is one of the best places for it. KLI (Kravis Leadership Institute) is prominent in the field of leadership. The KLI also worked with Business Guru Peter Drucker.

Blondie,

People make fun of us for being too career oriented. I had this question as well. Don't even think about it. CMC has alums at the head of every lion on Wall Street. Chances are that by the time you reach senior year you would have interned with both Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs! We have career nights and hedge fund panels. Alumni keep visiting and they are way up there.
Since CMC is a close knit community, the alumni are more connected than any other school. Just don't even think about it! You will get to meet people in finance and the professors will help you out as well. In your freshman year you might even sit and eat dinner with Bill Gates' no.1 money manager or KKR Founders Henry Kravis and George Roberts!

Thanks for the very informative post Santino

Blondie,

It would be beneficial for you to do research into CMC's alum database. You would quickly realize that the alums are no joke. There are more CEOs and top level executives per graduate of CMC than any other college or university in the nation. Any field that you would want to go into, all over the world, there are alums...

flamedude: Don't forget the 4 other undergrad colleges in the consortium, all of which offer psych courses in which CMC students can enroll. I know that a few of the schools approach the topic in very different ways, so you shouldn't be too limited...
