is the economics department at Dartmouth strong? Would a degree in it be competitive enough to apply to top graduate business schools?

yes it would be enough with good work experience

thanks, anyone else have an opinion?

you dont have to major in business to get accepted at a top mba school. So, yes its good enough.

Darmouth is awesome at placing people into banks and firms and thus getting people into awesome b-schools. Darmouth grads are heavily recruited.

b228, you don't apply to the top MBA schools right out of college, you neet 3-5 years of good quality work experience. Business schools care a lot about what you've done on the job and how you can bring that background to the MBA program both for the benefit of you and of your classmates. They care about GMAT and gpa, but to a lesser extent, and major almost not at all. Any top MBA school has a summer "boot camp" to teach you math and anything else you might be missing in prep for the program, and since they think a week or two is enough to give you all the info you need this should tell you how important (not!) these classes are to getting in.

As long as you make sure to take macroecon, calc, and maybe stats you will be amazingly prepared for B-school by econ at Dartmouth. Dartmouth grads have some of the best job and grad placement out there, along with Williams, Duke, Princeton, etc.

b238, not to get off topic, but how did you become interested in economics

how about brown's economis?
