Hi…I am going to be an economics transfer student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbour; this fall.
Does anyone know what level of math is necessary and what math topics are going to be useful for a major in economics.
for undergrad econ at michigan you just need basic knowledge of calc 1/2
It depends on how seriously you wish to take Economics. I took several graduate Economics courses and thought of pursuing a doctorate in Economics (even applied to a couple of programs). As such, in preparation of such an eventuality, I took Mathematics 115 (Calculus 1),116 (Calculus 2), 215 (Calculus 3), 217 (Linear Algebra) as well as a couple of Statistics (Statistics 250, Econ 451 and Econ 453) classes.
On the other hand, if your intent is to simply get an undergraduate degree in Economics, you will seldom need more than Calculus 1 (Mathematics 115) and basic statistics (250).
Thanks nubswitstubs and Alexandre. I am actually planning to do just economics undergrad and FINANCE IN GRAD SCHOOL. If I plan to study finance in grad school, do any of you know I would need more than CALC II
*know if I would need more than CALC II?
depends on the level of finance… e.g. financial math can require fairly high level math background
ok thanks nubswitstubs
nubswitstubs, I just wonna do pure FINANCE for grad school, not financial mathematics. Just FINANCE.
it varies dramatically depending on the specific program. you’re better off googling prerequisites for the specific programs you’re interested in rather than trying to make any sort of generalization across all finance programs.
Ok, thanks nubswitstubs
