I know that Amherst is a brilliant college, and I very much want to go there. However, when talking about colleges that are good to study maths and economics at, nobody has ever mentioned this one!

Is the quality of the education of these 2 subjects on par with UChicago, Yale, etc.?

What are the job prospects if you want to leave Amherst and go into banking/finance? Do employers realise how brilliant the college actually is?

That depends. It says that your location is in switzerland; probably no one has heard of Amherst there...

People in here are always saying that the people that should know about Amherst know about it. However, that cant be said for the average employer in different regions of the US. For example, most people in the west coast have not heard of Amherst, especially those in the urban slumps. The average American knows about the big football schools like USC, Stanford, Notre Dame, UTexas, etc. I cant say much about the economics department at Amherst,though-- sorry.

Whatever employers in urban slums might think, employers in banking/finance (OP's area of interest) certainly know Amherst and have a high opinion of it. Lots of Amherst grads go into those fields.

Amherst has a reputation for a strong econ and math departments. I have noticed, however, the math department seems to use a number of visiting professors, which does not bode well for the the students. Indeed, there seem to be a number of those non-tenure track professors on campus. In the realm of finance, I get the sense from my son that a significant number of students interview for positions in the financial services areas. Check out the names and types of the firms that come to campus to recruit. You will see very high end firms in a number of areas, including finance. They would not be there if the product were less than stellar.
