ECS 50 and ECS 165A

Currently I have 3 other GEs right now in addition to these two, I’m hoping to drop one of them or else ECS 165A. As a sophomore, I am hoping to get started on my upper divisions early, but I also understand that upper divisions can be very challenging, especially for computer science. The two GEs I was going to keep with these two ECS classes are PSY 1 and CMN 3, so nothing seemingly too hard, but would this schedule be manageable? If someone has taken ECS 165A and wants to provide feedback that would be extra helpful!

Well if you do end up taking 165A next quarter, I’m taking it too!

So I don’t know about 165A specifically, but I’ve had Nitta for 150 in spring and 160 this past quarter. He was very difficult for 150, easily the hardest CS class I’ve taken. But it was very much worth it because of how much you learned. His 160 was very laid back in comparison, and much easier. From what I’ve heard 165A with Nitta is closer to his 160 than his 150.

As far as ECS 50 goes, I had Butner for 154A and know several people that had him for 50. He’s a good instructor, and from what I’ve heard his 50 is just the right level of difficulty to learn the material without being inundated with work (as you would with Sean’s class).

So to my understanding, you should probably expect around 5-10 hours of outside work for each of 165A and 50. Don’t quote me on those numbers, because I don’t have firsthand experience with either.

PSC 1 requires research participation credits, so you can expect at least 6 hours dedicated to that. That’s throughout the quarter though. I’m not sure about CMN 3.

I’d say keep all of them and drop 165A if it proves to be too much.
