ECs for HYPSM

This is actually a question for a friend. His extracurriculars don't really show the well-roundedness college counselors recommend and instead revolve around his hobby: entrepreneurship. He's started 4 businesses during high school and currently runs an online store that makes two to three thousand dollars month. He's also somewhat in Model UN, got a 5 on AIME, and played a jv sport but not much else. He's got a perfect GPA and will have taken 5 APs by the end of junior year, and also has a 2300+ SAT so he seems covered in the academics department, but will HYPSM regard his focussed activities more highly than those huge laundry lists of ECs and leadership many people have?

afaik, showing a passion>laundry list of activities

Agreed. I don't know where this rumor that students have to be "well-rounded" came from or why it won't die, but colleges much prefer to see a clearly-defined passion than a bunch of random activites thrown together with the aim of making a good impression on their admissions officers.

and your friend has a seriously great chance for HYPSM. :)

Well-roundedness is nice, as long as there is also a specific passion to supplement it.

I just want to refer to an example on the "actual results" thread. One girl dedicated all her time to running her bakery (licensing/managment/etc) and got into Yale. I think it shows your passion. And entr. shows a lot of OTHER good qualities, too such as leadership, iniative, teamwork. All things that student council and sports can show, too. :)

Ok, the EC question has been answered. What do you guys think about his chances?

I think they are great!
I just have one inhibition; what does he do with these 2000 $ per month? Cuz the way he uses them and whether he expends them or not is PRETTY IMPORTANT!!

Okay, I keep seeing this "HYPSM" thing. Is it a school or the abbreviation for Harvard Yale Princeton Stanford MIT?
