Northwestern's the last school I have left to submit, but I'm applying to the Medill school. I have a lot of strong ECs but none with journalism (due to school scheduling issues). Is it even worth applying? I love the program but I'm not sure it's worth the application fee if that's the main criteria. GPA and SAT seems on target for Northwestern.

It depends on the strength of you essay and demonstrating adequate interest in Medill. It’s hard to say, but if you match in every other aspect with coursework and ECs than you should still be a strong candidate. Alternatively you could apply to another school that best matches what you’ve done with your ECs and transfer to Medill fairly easily if you decide that’s what you want to do.

@Heisenbergyk Should my essay address the fact that I had limited opportunity before and that’s why I like Medill?

Yes, you should definitely address reasons why you don’t have any experience and what specifically you hope to gain through the program at Medill. Also if you can, maybe try to connect the ECs you have to a way they will have prepared you for the classes you will take in the future (talk about experiences in English classes, the general useful skills you wish to transfer from other parts of life–like your ECs-- to provide an original light in Journalism etc). The key will be showing why you are interested and how your past has prepared you, despite the fact that it may look like up until this point you’ve had no apparent interest in journalism to someone reading your application. Good luck!
