My friend went to the Summer Scholar program and I went to visit him. If the rooms are like what I saw - he was living at their campus - then they are basically a semi-large room with enough space for (for those who are doubling) two beds, two desks/tables, a closet, and enough room in the middle of the room for clothes and other junk to be piled there.

For freshman-

Donlon- (i’m biased since I lived here) Best dorm on campus. Very social, you get to know almost everyone on your floor and it has nice rooms.
Mews- Very new and nice. Air conditioning!
Court-Kay-Bauer- Similar to Mews, but larger.
Jameson/High Rise- Suite style, the people I’ve talked to said it was pretty good socially.
Dickson- Older dorm, but very social. Rooms not quite as nice.
Balch- girls only, each room is large and has its own sink.
Townhouses- very nice, but secluded and quiet. A bit separated from other freshman dorms.

Isn’t Donlon a crappy old dorm? My friend’s sister who dormed there told him that it’s really old.

It may be one of the older dorms, but everything is very nice inside. I love my dorm. If you set up things properly, your room can be very spacious. Whenever someone enters my room for the first time, they’re always commenting on how much space I have (it helps if you throw your drawers under your bed). Anyways, the bathrooms are good (no urinals though since it used to be a girl’s dorm way back when). I wish they would clean more than once a week, but oh well. The common rooms are nice and big (they just installed new flat screens on all the floors). Don’t worry about not having TV… you either don’t have enough time to watch TV, or the shows you want can be watched online/off of DC++ (look it up). Also, no other dorm has DONLON GAMES!

I’m living in Donlon this year and I will say that it’s a pretty good dorm. Firstly, it’s right next to a community center, and not terribly far from Appel and Helen Newman either. Yes, it’s a fair walk to central campus/certain bus stops, but it’s not as bad as some other North Campus residences. As for Donlon itself, it has the reputation of being a very social dorm, and to some extent this is true. This, however, doesn’t stop less social, or quiet-insistent folks from being placed in the building. I already hinted at the issue with the obsessively demanding quiet folks in an earlier post.

so the bathrooms are in the room or in the hallway?

Bathrooms are in the hallways in most buildings (if not all).

Nice post, Finagler!
Also, thanks for commenting on this, profase.

Any suggestions as to single v. double?
And then, what type of dorm are you guys in - do you have a roommate; do you like your roommate; how many people like their roommates; etc.

I think the only dorm without hallway-style bathrooms is in the Eco House, but it’s pretty far from everything and only has doubles.

The single v. double debate comes down to your own personality and how lucky you get in the roommate matching process. Many freshmen go in wanting a double, and then try their best to get a single for sophomore year. While it may be nice to have a roommate in the beginning, as time goes in many find that they’d prefer their own living space, especially if they don’t get along with their roommates.

I’ve had a single since my freshman year and wouldn’t have it any other way. On the other hand, one of my best friends continues to prefer a double because she hates being alone and can easily handle typical roommate issues. So while most students probably prefer singles, it really depends on what kind of person you are.

So I got into Cornell Engineering ED and I’m like really really excited…just curious though ,when does the applying for housing begin? Coz i’ve been reading these posts and I feel like I wanna get into Donlon pretty soon

Freshman are assigned randomly to dorms unless you apply for balch, townhouses, or a program house. They send you the info in April.

Whoa. This I did not know…
We can’t pick single/double?

You can pick a preference in the housing survey, but there’s no guarantee that you’ll get the room you want. Most likely, though, you will get the specific room. But building of this room (unless specified) is pretty much random.

wait, so if i mark down townhouse, i am 100% going to get it? i just read that the chances of getting a townhouse is low, so the information i’m getting is kind of contradictory.

It’s not 100%, but you get preference.

well okay. i just wonder how often people get their preference.

^probs very likely since i did not request a townhouse and got placed there - i would assume they give people who request it first before randomly placing us…

lol i would hope so. i’ve read that cornell can be pretty random though

anyway if i can get a townhouse that’d be great =]

do any freshman live off campus?

No, they all live on North.
