As a Rice parent, I have to say great choice! My D loves it. Come back and let us know how things turn out for him!
I’m not the OP! Just someone following bc those were my son’s top choices. He went ED to Duke. We made him look at other schools to make sure he wasn’t choosing just bc he grew up rooting for Duke. He actually did a power point for us on why Duke, lol (his doing). His Rice undergrad (MIT PhD) math teacher even wrote him a separate rec for Rice. ? Duke!
Ah! Thanks for the explanation. And good luck to your son on Duke. My daughter loved Duke when she toured!
What did your son decide to do? Did he ED to any of the three? I spent undergrad and graduate years at NU (yes, its NU, not NW), but also considered Duke (Fuqua) for my MBA. Chicago affords so many internship opportunities, but I’m not so sure about that anymore. The weather is definitely better in Durham! My DD applied to NU (also on a pre-Business/Econ track) and may apply reg. decision to Duke. Regarding Greek Life, NU seems to be on the path of abolishment, as well (sadly, in my opinion, since I’ve been involved in a lot of KKG philanthropy in my old age, still active as an officer in my alumnae chapter), but Res. Life seems exciting now at NU, too.
@havenoidea - thanks for updating this thread!
Yes, he chose Rice and hasn’t looked back since he submitted. He had his alumni interview via zoom this week and while it was his first interview, he thought it went well. Currently he needs to find the motivation to complete regular decision apps before winter break.
Now we all wait and see if Rice chooses him! I’ll be sure to post when he gets his decision. Fingers crossed!
Thanks for your support, @PrdMomto1 @jym626 @havenoidea and others!
And thanks to @Faulkner1897 @DCCAWAMIIAIL @Publisher @thumper1
(probably forgetting others)
I am so thankful for these message boards!
I meant to respond earlier. I’m Ultimom for Ultimate mom. I played Ultimate and now both my kids do. Earlier you mentioned that your son plays Ultimate. Rice can play year round and has good relationships with the local club teams. In addition to the college season, your son would be able to play pick up and hat tournaments. U Texas has a good team and has a huge tournament every spring.
My son’s guidance counselor recommended he apply ED to Rice, but alas, he wanted to leave Texas. We’re in Austin so Rice was still leaving home.
Good luck to your son. Houston is an extremely diverse city. There are lots of great restaurants, museums, and parks near Rice.
Thanks so much, @ultimom! The hope for year-round ultimate was definitely appealing to my son and it’s awesome to hear about the opportunities at Rice.
I will be in touch if he gets good news.
Where is your son hoping to go?
Which college is she in? My kiddo was in Hanszen.
@jym626 She’s in Lovett.
good luck! keep us upated
My son is a sophomore at Northeastern. He is very happy with his choice. Like Rice, Northeastern has kept campus open with testing, masks, and distancing. I’m still on the board because my younger is high school class of 2022.
My son was accepted to Rice! Thanks to everyone for your honest insight and guidance.
Congratulations! That’s wonderful! Best of luck to him for a great college experience.
Thank you @elena13!
