ED-buyer's remorse, what really happens

So, I have been surfing the boards instead of working on taxes. Hmmm.

Coming across multiple threads of the same thing. Kids accepted to a college ED and then still keeping applications in to other colleges, deciding they don't want the ED school if they get in another school or if they don't get the money they want from the ED school.

Does anyone know what REALLY happens in terms of this ED situation? Do the schools share lists? What do schools do if a kid breaks their ED contract? I know what I think SHOULD be happening...but is there really follow through?? Our high school had one small problem like this(not intentional?) last year and it seemed it would be messy, but then the college informed the GC it was no big deal, though time will tell..

Many schools will share this information, and the student could end up losing out on all schools, once they find out that he reneged. Smaller schools may not bother to do anything. So it is quite likely that the student faces no consequences. For example if an ED student to Princeton later gets a huge scholarship at Tulane, Tulane may not really care to revoke their decision or $$, and just be thrilled to have him anyway.

In the end, the H.S. gets blackballed, as the G.C. has been signing off on all of the student's apps, and the H.S. could spend many years in the dungeons as far as acceptances to the ED school go. So future applicants pay the price.
