Hi guys,

My prospective major is CS. In some earlier posts here on CC and on consulting some people , I was told that I've reasonably good chances at CMU.
I have been advised by some friends that I should apply EA/ED somewhere. So naturally, My first choice was CMU ( As you would know, It's CS program is the best in US).

So should I go for ED in CMU ? I mean ..... There are better univs out there like Gtech, Berkely or Caltech ..

There's really no BIG difference b/w a college ranked #5 or #1 CSwise.
CMU's CS is good, no doubt about that, but I want to consider the overall university as well ( prestige, location) and not just head for it's renowed CS program .... get it ?

I'm confused regarding this ... Do help ..
Thanks !

CMU is good for everything, mostly. My friend who started going there this year loves the place. The coursework is a little demanding, but then again that’s why it’s such a good university.

Apply to CMU ED. I’m thinking of doing the same. What are your stats anyway?

If you really want to do CS then applying for ED at CMU is your best choice.

CMU does’nt give fin aid does it???

sigh *

how I wish it was 55k fin aid per year…

so unfair…:(

CMU is absolutely excellent. On par with stanford on engg. in one ranking.

is anyone going for loans ??? is it worth for schools like cmu ?? i had to cut it off my list coz it doesn’t offer aid :(

Nope. m nt opting for fin. aid.

@aniruddhc: Thanks. That helped.

Yes I know that CMU is the best choice for me if I want CS.
I want to know Universitywise … Is it better than Caltech (CS rank - 9) … better than Stanford(CS - 3) … berkeley(CS - 5) ?? No.

OK Let’s nt compare … But how is the overall university … I was damn sure to ED at CMU but then someone said that it’s not in the same league as caltech, berkeley and all, it’s not selective and some other negative pts… So plz tell me your opinions abt the place nt just it’s CS department.

As an example …
Let’s say Vellore Institute Of Technology ( VIT ) has the best Computer Science Department in the country and say IIT Delhi’s CS comes next. So I’ll obviously go for IIT-D na ?..

CS rank matters but not so much when I’m comparing #1 to #2 or #5.

what you mean is prestige then- I’d say stanford, berkeley and caltech would surpass CMU in terms of prestige(in India atleast)

According to me there’s only a unnis-bees ka farak between UCB, Cornell, Stanford and the like for engineering. Think about it. It’s all about how much you can extract from the university, since all the resources/opportunities are available anyway.
