Issues surrounding the advisability of applying ED II vs. ED I have been raised in a few recent threads, and one issue has me thinking.

There is general agreement that a student who needs to shore up his/her transcript with first semester senior grades should not apply ED I. But what about ED II? Specifically, do colleges consider first semester senior grades in evaluating an ED II application, or as is the case with ED I, does an applicant rise or fall on the strength of grades earned during the first six semesters? Does the policy vary from school to school?

“as is the case with ED I, does an applicant rise or fall on the strength of grades earned during the first six semesters?”
One semester’s grades will NOT override the prior 6 semesters grades, but if continued improvement while taking more challenging classes is shown during the first semester of Senior year, it may help to nudge a student whose stats put him on the edge of acceptance into the “admit” pile.

I understand that. Mine was the narrower question whether for ED II purposes, first semester senior grades are considered. Obviously they’re not for ED I purposes. (Not yet available.)

They can rescind an acceptance based on 7th (or 8th) semester grades. But SCEA and EDI decisions are based only on grades from the first six semesters.

We’re going to have to agree to disagree. Even if first-semester senior grades are requested, and they always are, they don’t factor into the decision. That’s why EDI is considered a bad idea for a student who needs grades from first-semester senior year to bolster his/her academic record.

What I’m really trying to figure out is whether grades from first semester senior year are considered when ED II applications are under review.

Let me get this straight… First semester grades are requested, but they are not factored into the decision. And they do that because…they are bored? Right.

Why do you bother to ask, if you seem to know the answer. Is it because you have insider information about ED I that some of us don’t, but some how you don’t have the same insider info for ED II? Why don’t you just call up the admission office.

No. They do this because if a kid really screws up 7th semester, they can rescind the ED acceptance. And I bet they sometimes do.

Think about it. ED I decisions come out in December, before the seventh semester of high school has even ended. So how could seventh semester grades play a role in the ED I decision? They haven’t yet been handed out.

My kid’s school runs 2 semester system, grades come out in Jan and June. For early admission they wanted to know what D1’s grades were in Oct(mid semester, not mid year). Another poster also said, when her son applied to Dartmouth for ED, adcoms contacted her son’s school to get his mid semester(Oct) grades to give their final decision. Everyone at my daughter’s school who applied ED/EA all submitted their mid semester grades by Nov 1.

As far as for purpose of rescind, they ask for your final senior grades, not your 1st semester grades.

I don’t know how else to make it more clear.

Yes, EDII decisions generally request and factor in the 7th semester grades, so a kid who wanted to show their 7th semester results could choose to apply EDII.

Colleges generally want as much information as possible when making their decisions, so for ED I they will request first-quarter or trimester grades if they’re available in time (but for many schools they’re not).

Thanks, etselec. That makes sense, since ED II decisions don’t come out until February. Do you have any examples of schools that factor in 7th semester grades for ED II purposes?
