ED Notification

Hurray! I just got the letter. And yes, it was the big envelope. I guess they sent it much earlier... Anyways, I am very excited and at the same time relieved. I look forward to seeing some of you next year!

Perhaps we should start a Class of 2011 thread for everyone to introduce themselves.

It seems like a ton of people have been accepted ED. How many people were accepted last year? wasn't it around 40? I know people are more likely to post their decision here if they get accepted and not deferred or rejected, but this just seems a little odd.

Heh, funny you should say that. A good friend of mine had his/her heart set on Mudd and applied ED and didn't get in. His/her stats were pretty amazing so these people must have done something pretty crazy as well.

In addition, CC has a higher than normal set of mean stats... That is, students who are around on these parts are very aware and serious about their college situation. There is probably a strong correlation between that and being good students. The net effect is less rejections on CC for things like this. (Plus very few people who get rejected openly offer that bit of information, like you said.)

During the Changing Faces program at HMC, we were given four mock applications to evaluate as if we were admissions officers - they told us that out of four apps, two would be rejected, one deferred, and one accepted. I can't remember if they were referring to ED or RD, but the numbers sound about right.

That would be ED because of the "defer" option. So does that mean that admissions office is expecting to lower the acceptance rate to around 25% this year? And geez I didn't know Harvey Mudd rejected ~50% of the ED applicants. If they were like other elite schools and rejected only ~20% of the ED applicants then the acceptance rate for RD would drop...

Honestly, I couldn't remember if they said defer or waitlist, that's why I was confused. But they did say one would be definitely accepted and the other two rejected.

OT: I heard from a friend today that HMC's first semester is pass/fail. How does that work exactly?

"OT: I heard from a friend today that HMC's first semester is pass/fail. How does that work exactly?"

Pass/fail is great. It really isn't Pass/fail but more HighPass/Pass/NoPass. Essentially, Mudd realizes that going from HS to a place like Mudd is a pretty big transition. They want you to ease into the academic scene and explore different programs and have a life. Furthermore, why should the first semester be counted in your GPA? All of your classes (except if you for instance took CS60 your first semester) will not count toward your GPA.

It is not terribly difficult to pass all of your classes. However, be forwarned that you cannot just slide completely... People do "no pass" classes on Pass/fail.

Take advantage of Pass/fail (go have a life, meet people, etc), but be sure to take your classes seriously as well. Even if you do pass but you don't know the material, it WILL come back to bite you in the ars through your second year.

RocketDA,
Does Mudd still issue "Get A Life Letters" to those with "too many" high passes? DS1 considers this policy one of the best things about Mudd!

Haha yep. I got one of those...I am such a dweeb.

"RocketDA,

Yes, absolutely. Get a life letters are still around.

I won't be receiving a get a life letter, but I also won't be failing any classes (I'm pretty sure at least). First semester was thus a great success!!

Oh and no Hum 1 ever again :) (every single person in my class passed, for those of you who are worried about Hum 1).

"I won't be receiving a get a life letter..."

Well I didn't think so either...

how many people applied ED, and what percentage was accepted?

(this thread reminds me of a cialis commercial)

Usually the admissions office does not release that information until much later in the year. I suppose I could try and ask them when I get back to school tomorrow.
