Edinburgh

I applied through UCAS (I'm American) to St. Andrews, University of Edinburgh, UCL, Durham, and Oxford on September 25. I have already heard back from St. Andrews, will I hear back from Edinburgh soon too? Or will I have to wait until the spring? What about the others? Any advice for an American student going to the UK for university?

Nobody knows. It could be weeks or many months, there is no way to tell. Usually Oxford applicants are invited to interviews in early December but it might be sooner for international applicants. If I were you I wouldn’t count on getting any other responses for at least a month.

Oxford interview invites go out by college (all posted at the same day/time) at the end of November. The only accomodation for international students is that you may get an email in addition to a paper letter (varies by college though). For the rest, think of it as rolling admissions, though I would guess Edinburgh will be back to you before the end of the year.

Have you found the UK website the student room? Lots of resources there.

As for practical advice: bring less stuff. No matter what, you are likely to bring more than you need, and it’s not as if you are going to the remote wilds- anything you really need will be available locally. UK students don’t really do the ‘decorate your dorm room to the nines’ thing. Just bring a couple of things that say ‘home’ to you, for when you get your first cold of the year and are feeling miserable.

Thanks! Would you say Edinburgh is more or less competitive than St. Andrews?

In real life, for a US student, about the same, meaning if you got an offer from St A’s and you met the requirements for the program you applied to at Edinburgh you are more likely than not to get an offer from Edinburgh. Note to other regular posters: that is NOT saying anything about the two schools in any other context!
