Edinburgh

I'm thinking of applying for a Masters program at the University of Edinburgh.

It's a pretty prestigious school in the UK, usually making its way onto many top 10 UK lists, and top 50 worldwide lists.

However, does it hold any favorable reputations/name recognition here in the United States?

Thanks.

For me, yes, as I think I’m going to be applying there next year. For people who know anything about British schools I’m sure they’ll recognize it as a great school, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the average American knew nothing about it, as most people don’t seem to know about any universities but Oxbridge.

Actually Edinburgh wouldn’t make it into most top 10 British league tables (this means very little, they’re not to be trusted)

I got the impression from Americans i know that British universities are judged on their aesthetics and history as well as academic performance. Edinburgh is certainly well regarded in the US, perhaps not for the right reasons but whatever…

ITA. People in the UK will know of it, and almost certainly rate it above St Andrews (which people in the UK, outside the world of universities, think is a golf course. It’s really not that famous here). But in the US it’s famous because it;s in Edinburgh, and that is one of the very few places in the UK that people can name.
