Education Major

Has anyone had any experience with Education at Muhlenberg? I'm looking for any perspective on the program and classes. I'm looking into Secondary Teaching but most of what I hear about the school is more pre-med centered.

Would be interested in the replies here…thanks for posting. Our son is looking to teach biology at the secondary school level.

My S is leaning towards History/Secondary Ed. We visited last week and he really liked the school, but we don’t know anything about the strength of the 2ndary Ed program. Would also like to hear from someone who does.

I was in El Ed for a few semesters; they’ve recently overhauled the program but hopefully what I do know that is still relevant is helpful…

The best part about the program (in my opinion) is the fieldwork component. Under the old system (and I’m sure it’s similar with the new one) you had to do 30 hours a semester in a classroom. I was placed into 5th grade, K, and a special-ed 2nd grade classroom… Different teachers have you do different things but I always did a lot of one-on-one or small group work with the kids, and I got to teach a couple of lessons.

The classes for the most part were interesting and the professors for the most part were enthusiastic and had real-life teaching experience. If you have specific questions you can PM me; I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to answer completely but hopefully I can help.

Our freshman is just starting the 30 hour field component. Great to be in the classroom in the first year. Math for Secondary Ed - so not a bio major. Mberg is not full of teachers which is nice actually. Focus is learning your subject and then getting your cert. I think this creates a better balance in college education - also allows more flexibility which is important since the teaching job market could be tough in the coming years. 'Berg is solid.
