Congress has been trying to deal with the Tax Code's so-called "marriage penalty" for years without success. Right now, I'd rather they simply renew the programs they already have, or maybe fund them? Or how anout raising the threshhold for the Alternative Minimum Tax?</p>
<p>Don't count on Congress to try to make these things "fair." And what's fair to one may not be fair to another. I could rant that it's not "fair" that I am penalized for having saved for my d's education and lived beneath my means so that we end up getting less aid, while my counterparts have bought fancy homes, taken trips to Europe, bought expensive cars, and get "need-based aid". Someone's ox is always going to get gored; the systems are too complex to avoid it.</p>
<p>After all, if "pro" is the opposite of "con", then what's the opposite of "progress"?</p>
