Effect of High School results

I am currently in 11th grade and so far I have been performing really well (Straight A's so far).

Unfortunately my performance in 9th & 10th grade have not been as well as it is now (got couple of B's & a C)

I hope that average results in the first 2 years won't jeopardize my chances of admission because the academics of 11th & 12th grade is more rigorous than that of 9th & 10th grade.

So when I apply, will my results in '9th & 10th' grade have the same weight as my results in '11th & 12th' grade?

need some opinions

Some schools don’t count 9th grade. All count 10th grade. Being from Bangladesh, make sure you apply to a wide variety of schools as international applicants to the most selective schools tend to be perfect GPA and top SAT people.

just a guess:

9th grade: 5%
10th grade: 20%
11th grade: 35%
12th grade 1st semester: 40%

Well, it depends on what type of classes. Most colleges are looking beyond grades, they are looking at the difficulties of the course work. If you get a C in calculus compared to a C in algebra, the C in calculus will weight more than the C in algebra.

Its about 9th-15% 10th-30% 11th-50% 12th-5%

Even without colleges reviewing your transcript and looking at specific grades, those Bs and Cs are going to harm your GPA. Those straight A’s will certainly help you, and even if they ARE the main focus, it’s still doubtful they’ll be able to pull your GPA out of the high 2s/low 3s, which isn’t going to look good. That GPA will furthermore be a giant anchor on your rank.

Either way: the past is past. Study, keep up those As, do good an SATs, get some nice ECs, and dazzle them with an essay. You can’t fix those B’s and C’s, but you can do everything you can to cover 'em up.

snapple – I don’t know how Sr. year can be 5%

It’s either:

Rolling Admission, Early Action, or other schools that don’t SEE your Sr. year grades at the time of admissions decision: Sr. yr grades = 0, or –

Schools that DO see your Sr. year first semester grades Regular Admission Top 30, for example: the breakout I posted.

Grades are all relative. My school is known for ridiculous grade inflation. In fact, a 3.9 UW puts you just outside the top 5%. The other high school in my town has not graduated a 4.0 student in twenty-something years. Even the valedictorian last year had a 3.91 UW GPA.

A lot of your grades depend on the rigor of your schedule and the strength of your school. A Penn regional representative told me that adcoms look closer at class rank and the selectivity/rigor of your high school than GPA. On its own, GPA is a meaningless number (unless, of course, you have something alarmingly out-of-sync, like a 3.0 UW for top schools).

Hey OP, I’m in the same boat! 7 B’s and a Cin trigonometry 9th and 10th grade, all honors/ AP courses. Straight A’s junior year and so far this year. My gpa is 3.71, ranked 20/ 181. You can get past it. What is done is done. I did not explain the C, but so far I have been accepted to a few colleges, with a nice merit scholarship. You can’t change your old grades, but it is better to improve through HS that to trend downwards! Just do your best, and try to compensate in other ways.

how do you figure this low GPA from a couple B’s and 1 C in 9th and 10th grade combined?

Well, my results were not so bad. But, they were not really good either.

My high school does not have GPA. It follows a percentage system and based on that, we are given grades.
9th- 7A, 1B, 1C
10th- 7A, 2B

And our academic system is sort of different from the American one.
We are given the option to minimum 6 subjects in 9th & 10th grade (I had 9, most people take 7 or 8 )

And in 11th & 12th grade we have to study minimum 4 subjects (I have 7)

Well, it depends on what you mean by a “couple,” and I was referring to unweighted. It may be different school to school but at least at mine, a B is like a 3.2. So it really depends on what you mean by “a couple” a suppose.

As far as the grades you got them in it’s completely irrelevant as far as GPA goes. A B in 9th grade is the exact same as a B in 12th. The only thing that changes it is the level of the course you took. But even then, that won’t do anything to your UW.
