Egyptology at Brown

I’m currently a junior in high school and considering applying to Brown in the fall. I want to do a double major in egyptology/literary arts. Do any of you know how good the Egyptology Department is? I hear is the only one of its kind in the country.

Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies

Brown's Egyptology Dept. is not the only one; there are others. The University of Chicago's program, in particular, is very well-known.

Welcome to NELC at the University of Chicago

Thank you all for your wonderful information. I appreciate it.

that's funny. some reputable college guidebook (fiske, maybe?) def said it was the only one of its kind "in the western hemisphere". just goes to show how much you can trust those things...ehh maybe it was "The insider's guide", they tend to be a tad sensationalist...

No it is not funny at all...And IMO u re misunderstanding the situation...BROWN University has the ONLY Egyptology "DEPARTMENT" in the Western World. Of course some other universities offer it as a Major (or Concentration) For example, as you can see, UChicago has a Program offered by the Near Eastern Lang & Civilizations "Department".

I think there is a huge difference between a department and just a small program. A similar thing is there with History of Math department of Brown. It is the only such department in the World. But of course it doesn't mean that nobody in the world can study/know stuff about History of Math. For example this year a professor from Yale also teaches there as a visiting professor.
BUT once again as far as I know of Brown University is the only school in the Western World that has a Egyptology DEPARTMENT.

jeez, i didn't mean rofl-kind-of-funny. and i was just assimilating the information others provided into my own knowledge of the situation..."IMO", you could politely assert your opinion without saying that I "misunderstood" simply because I trusted people.

BTW, if I had any personal investment in Egyptology whatsoever, I would have researched it, so...don't flame me bro.

Sorry about that..i was just way too sleepy and probably had the wrong approach..i didn't mean singular "you" while sayin "u misunderstood" it...=)) i apologize if it sounded aggressive...
