Egyptology

I'm a junior involved in the college search. I'm really interested in Egyptology, and I've been trying to find colleges that offer the program. Yale, Penn, and Brown offer it, but they are highly selective. Only a few colleges offer the major, and I'm afraid the competition will make admission more difficult. Should I tell the colleges I'm interested in Egyptology, or should I put undecided? Does your choice of major on the application matter? Also, does anyone know of any other colleges that offer the major? I have pretty good stats (4.0 uw, 1560 SAT). I'd also like to major/minor in biology, so a strong biology program would be a plus.

you should definately state that you're interested in egyptology.. i'm sure it's in high demand considering you're the first person i've heard planning on majoring in it.

university of chicago

Egyptology--the study of ancient artifacts located in England.

no no rooster, that's archaeology

oh lol. My bad

Yes, definitely state that you are interested in Egyptology. I think Egyptology is a major that adcoms probably don't see that many people interested in, so it could actually help you a bit. The reason that so few colleges offer it,I presume, is because there simply aren't that many people interested in it as a major. I don't think you will be facing stiff competition to get into an Egyptology program. I don't know aobut any specific programs, but I have been to the Penn museum and they have a pretty good collection of Egpytian stuff, which I imagine would be a good resource for Egyptology students.

Sounds like Penn could be a match. Thanks for the info. I haven't been able to visit Penn yet, so I haven't seen their museum. :(

IBClass06, I just posted some info in the thread in the Parents Forum, relayed to me by an Egyptologist friend.

OK, I got my question answered in the Parents' Forum. For anyone else interested, these schools offer the best programs: Chicago, Brown, Johns Hopkins

Other programs (I don't know much about the quality): U Toronto, Michigan, Penn, Yale, UCLA, UC Berkeley, U Memphis, Emory
