My friend will be going to a CCC with this major. He placed into Math 180. His counselor recommended he stay for 3 years instead of just 2. I think he can do it in 2 years for sure and still keep his grades up if he's willing. Is it doable; to transfer with this major in 2 years even though he is behind one math class? Should he wait 3 years?

What is math 180?

pre-calculus, one class behind calc 1

With summers there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be able to do it in 2 years or a year and a half. It will require that he have at least 4 consecutive terms (because he must take pre-calc, then calc 1, then 2, then he can do 3+4+linear), and 5 or 6 is a much more realistic number, but with summers that can be done in 2 years.

right right. He’s also worried about not doing well. I say if he can’t do this in 2 years then he won’t survive upper division classes once he gets out. and three years would be way to slow… would he need to take anything other then those major pre-reqs? should he take anything else?

He should take:
Calc 1, 2, 3, 4 (usually called Differential Equations) and Linear Algebra
Calc-based Physics (usually called Analytical Physics) 1 and 2 (these must be taken after calc 1, might be good to wait till after calc 2 as well)
General Chemistry 1, maybe 2 as well
English Composition 1
I’d recommend Econ, micro and macro (they might be labeled 1 and 2)
Then maybe a few other humanities or social science classes, whatever might be required for distribution.

Do be sure to check what transfers at places he may want to go.

where does he go to CC? If it happenes to CUNY, you can transfer to a 4 years.

Sorry, he should also take a programming class, maybe two or three depending on what will transfer elsewhere. I knew I was forgetting something.

I agree with using summers.

Yes, EE is one of those majors where the program is built upon starting off with Calculus I as a fall semester freshman.

I only know about the EE and CS majors since I started off an EE major and ended up a Math/CS major. In CS, you can actually start with Pre-Calculus and still finish in 4 years w/o summers because not as many courses are based on the Calculus sequence.

thanks for the feedback guys!
