Eliminating A College Day by Day! Come Help Me!

I would remove Vanderbilt. I think it isn't going to be what you are looking for. More conservative than you would like and less laid-back.

Your reaches seem really reachy to me. My son had an ACT of 33 and a slightly higher GPA and didn't get into NU. He did get into CMU, however. I think visiting CMU might have tipped the balance. Plus he applied to HSS which is the easiest CMU school to get into. He also got into Bucknell - he visited there, too. I would choose no more than two reaches and visit both of them and do the interviews - show lots of interest.

Well today ill eliminate a reach. All of them seem liek great schools but some of them might be too much of a reach. Which one of my reaches least fits this description, in your opinion: laid back, moderate/slightly left, people know eachother, hang out in dorms, go to breakfast together...

New List, still need to eliminate a reach.

My College List (So far, feel free to give suggestions)

Reaches:
University of Chicago
Northwestern
Vanderbilt
Carleton
WUSTL
Macalaster

Matches:
U of Illinois-Urbana
Knox College
Miami Univ.
Beloit-GONE
University of Wisconsin
Bucknell
Case Western
Carnegie Mellon(low reach)
St. Louis University

Safeties:
Indiana Univ.
Purdue
Mizzou
Marquette
Valparaiso-GONE

I agree with ricegal, take out Vanderbilt. From what I've heard/read, it's a bit more conservative, especially because if it's southern location.

Alright so going with popular advice, I am eliminating Vanderbilt off my reaches. It kinda seems like its too high of a reach and its location combines with the schools too conservative approach.

Bucknell is very preppy.

Which reach should I remvoe!!! Im so lost

BUMPP! Please help! I need advice on the reaches.

If I were you, I would get rid of Northwestern-way to great of a reach for you to waste a spot if you really need to get rid of reaches on your list. It’s a crapshoot for those with near perfect stats and great EC’s, so why bother if you have to eliminate schools? You might as well apply to more reasonable reaches and leave room on your list for more matches that you will actually get into so that you have more options to choose from when decisions come out.

If you are going for “laid-back” and “moderate/slightly left” then Macalester is not the place for you cause it is high-strung and crazy liberal.

I would say that eliminating Vanderbilt is a good call because even though it is a great school and I really like it, I am pretty conservative and the school doesn’t seem like what you are looking for. Northwestern also seems like a little too big of a reach although it too is a great school.

And also, you might want to consider removing Miami Univ cause I like it alot for its conservativeness, and that means you probably wouldn’t like it.

If I had to choose one of the schools that I would think would be a great fit for you, I would have to go with Madison. I couldn’t give enough praise for that school. Great location/great city/great athletics, school spirit/solid academics although it is not too high strung/and top notch professors.

Thanks a bunch both of youguys! I agree with Northwestern but i love th ecollege so much i dont want to remove it haha I might have to though. The only other one i could eliminate would be macalester or chicago.

I would eliminate Macalester then. I live literally two blocks from it and although I’m quite biased, I really don’t like the school. The neighborhood is quite conservative and the school is crazy liberal and the two don’t mix very well.

As for Northwestern, I know how it feels to have a great school that fits you and you really want to apply there but don’t have a great chance, I feel the same way about Notre Dame. If that’s the school you like, go for it!

Is financial aid/cost a concern?

Umm yea i think so. Im in a family of 4 that makes about 100,000 combined.

Still cant decide on that reach

I don’t know if this matters to you but Carlton is in the middle of nowhere. It’s a great school but I just want to bring that to your attention.

Ok so i decided that ill eliminate the college that i have the WORST chance in.
