I know it's early in the year, but I feel as if the students of Binghamton have an elitist attitude. I know it's supposed to be a good university, but it's no where near a top 20 school and doesn't warrant the elitism that some of the students are giving off.

As someone who’s looking with my D at NY schools and this one in particular, I’m just wondering if you’re a student there or if this is an observation from reading the CC posts?

I’ve been reading the CC posts, and didn’t come away feeling that there was any pervasive spirit of elitism expressed here. I presume OP is a freshman there.

I see where you’re coming from, and I do agree for the most part. A lot of students do feel they’re superior to everyone else, since they think they’re in the best state school of New York. But they’ll be surprised how little the name Binghamton means to employers.

However, I still cant get over the fact that most Bing students are poor as hell, so “elite” wouldn’t be the word that I would use.

I would say the opposite…

From all my time at Bing, I’m yet to encounter such people. Anywhere you go you’ll find people like that, I guess.

I’ve met plenty of people who are happy to be at Bing, and happy to be accepted. Never met any one who considered themselves to be “elite.”

I go to Binghamton–I am a junior and I believe that it is the exact opposite. Every private school of my friends that I visit, I feel that everyone thinks they are better than me. At Binghamton, kids are extremely nice and are not rich and snobby. I visited Cornell a few times and hated the elitist, spending daddy’s millions, attitude.

I go to Binghamton, and I hardly feel that anyone I’ve met are elitists. I do see the occasional person who, if the topic is brought up, says that Binghamton is the best SUNY. But so far everyone I’ve met at Binghamton are nice and kind of poor, haha.

I would agree with those who have suggested that elitists are a scarce commodity at Binghamton. I know a number of the kids from this area – from average middle class families – who chose Binghamton over some more highly ranked private schools because they felt more comfortable socially there.

An elitist attitude isn’t warranted anywhere…usually a sign of insecurity.

Quite honestly, the only “elitist” vibe I get are from certain politically-inclined organizations on campus such as College Republicans / Democrats. Other than that, I haven’t really noticed an elitist vibe in the variety of organizations I participate in, nor do I have any friends who think of themselves that way.

Elitism is ever-so-slightly warranted for students who manage to get into Decker, though. ;)
