Elmont high school senior Harold Ekeh credited others Friday for his success in gaining admittance to all eight Ivy League schools and several other universities: his parents for moving to the United States from Nigeria when he was 8, and his teachers for challenging him.

But it sounds like the other dude who did this last year, I think his name was something like Kwasi Enin. Good for them, but at the end of the day they can only attend one
I wonder if someone could figure out the statistical probability of being accepted at all 8 ivy leagues, admission at one isn’t contingent of another so I wonder if you’d just do a simple multiplication of admission rates or if there are other factors to consider…

Yeah, very similar to Kwasi who also decided to go to Yale as this young man seems to be leaning towards. Very good for him!!!
throws away AP Stats book
After looking up the school out of curiosity, he was the class Sal. and an Intel Semifinalist among other things. The val is also a very accomplished girl too. Obviously at this point there’s no wrong choice, congrats to him and his family!
Even if you assume the applicant is so awesome that he has a 50/50 chance at each school, the odds are still about 1 in 1000. That’s why these stories make the news.
@mobius911 This kid had more than a 50/50 chance at each school. Obviously he had a truly outstanding application containing stratospheric teacher recs, grades, essays, and extra circulars coupled with his status as a URM in STEM. His odds for acceptance at all the ivies is likely much much higher than the .01% you extrapolate as it came true.
The real reason these stories make news is because such diamond applications, especially to all 8 ivies, are such a tiny proportion of submitted applications. This is where the 1 in 1000 (or whatever the number of students applying to all 8 ivies) comes into play.
Kwasi Enin lives 15 minutes away from me!!!
Wow… this kid hit the jackpot.
URM + Intel + 2270 + Sal
Nevertheless, he still serves as the pinnacle of ivy league applicants, regardless of ethnicity.
Congrats to him for this unique opportunity!
