Ignore that - she got an update today that her interview is for the 3+1 business program so mystery solved!
Son received email that neither of his applications for college Fellow or Leadership were accepted for interview. Yes the money would have been nice. But wondering now without access to these types of programs, how does the rest of the student body fair with regard to mentorship from professors, research, internships. Etc. my son was also accepted to Isenberg at UMass and Northeastern. Waiting on his RDs. I really like Elon as does he. Just wondering about access to coops or internships if you arenât in one of these programs.
Anyone have experience w kids in and not in these and how their experience differs because of it? Thanks
I canât say for sure since I donât have a kid there yet, but my impression is that Elon is very strong for all of those things in general, just that students outside of fellows have to make sure to reach out and set everything up.
One example I can think of, on our tour our guide talked about one morning a week they have free coffee and breakfast that is attended by students and faculty, he also pointed out how professors offices lined the common area where students can gather. I got the impression there was a strong emphasis on facilitating relationships between students and professors, something that certainly didnât exist at the large university I attended. They also have people to help set up internships and study abroad. All of these are for all students, I am positive they will work to set up what ever your son is interested in,I had a great impression of the school in general.
I am curious if anyone else has a child who received merit on acceptance (engagement scholarship) but did not get a fellow interview. The whole basis of that scholarship are the attributes that should have at least led to a leadership interview. Do you think they try to use this later merit and programs to lure kids who are not already committed? My child is committed and while we appreciated the engagement scholarship- we were surprised she did not at least get an interview given that fact.
I would agree with this. My daughter had a friend who went to Elon and said that it wasnât uncommon to be invited to a professorâs house for dinner. I think thatâs where the size of Elon works in a studentâs favor, as opposed to a large university.
Not sure what major your child is pursuing, but when we toured the business school, a couple of current students (seniors) presented, and both had multiple internship opportunities during their time at Elon (although none of the internships turned into full time offers, for whatever reason). My guess is also that while the Fellows programs may help facilitate opportunities to a greater degree, non-Fellows students also have access to mentorship, research, internships, etc. (they better - for what the tuition cost is!)
mama best, my daughter was offered a Presidential scholarship, but does not appear to have been selected for a Fellows/Scholars interview. Very disappointed. This program is what put Elon so high on her list. If we donât hear something soon, I feel sure my daughter will opt to go elsewhere. Personally, I hold out a little hope, because Elon seems a lovely fit for her.
Daughter was offered interviews for the college fellow and honors fellow. Elon offers a fairly niche major sheâs interested in so has always been an option but this increased her interest. We had already booked tour and now will participate in virtual Fellow wknd a few days after.
What is the criteria for a Presidential Scholarship btw?
Iâm afraid I am unclear. It came with her admissions news. Itâs $6k/yr renewable each year. I FINALLY just got clarification from admissions that she has an invitation to interview for Honors Fellows. They acknowledged the portal glitches & apologized. Happy, of course.
Was her portal blank? My daughters is. I guess she should call as well. Very frustrating.
Is her portal corrected yet? From what we saw last night, my child thought she was invited to interview for 2 programs, but this morning it appears that it is only one. Wondering if I should call admissions. Iâm sure they are inundated with calls right now!
No. She says does not seem to be. She will call after school.
I agree with making the call. I had to reach out today & was told several kidsâ accounts had glitched. Those that saw anything regarding an invitation should most definitely mention that it was there at one point. Good luck to those awaiting clarification!
My child received notification last night of acceptance with $6,000 presidential and invitation to interview for fellows! She is super excited. Deciding between Elon and Furman where she was awarded Townes. Any opinions between the two? Thanks in advance.
Furman was second (to Elon) on my daughterâs list last year. Congrats on the Townes! Financially, they come out fairly even if she were to also get a fellows program, as long as Elon continues to have a base cost significantly lower than Furman (roughly $18000 difference this year). For my da, acceptance into the fellows program was a huge selling point, not just for the dollars (which were critical) but even more so for the program of study. Furman is definitely smaller in terms of number of students. I have continued to feel that Elon is uniquely invested in out-of-class experiences. Love it. Again, congrats!
Hi! I would have your daughter contact admissions and see if anything can be moved around, given your existing tour booking and daughterâs break time from school. Hopefully they will work with her. Getting that admitted students tour moved earlier would help, because I donât think you will be done with that in one hour.
If not, and you get in the position where you need to do some interviews online but have to be out of your hotel room, maybe ask if Elon could offer up a space for her to do her interviews. I also think that most hotels will extend checkout for one hour if you ask ahead of time.
Hi, my son is a non-Fellows sophomore so isnât deep into internships yet (and also heâs a psych major which isnât rife with internship opportunities), but, I agree with the other posters that the level of faculty engagement is very high for all students. He was asked to be a TA after his first semester bio class, and has good relationships with his professors so far. I totally forgot about the Campus Coffee that was so impressive to us when we toured! Itâs been virtual but is coming back in person very soon! The entire campus has a break period on Tuesday mornings where faculty all gather to mingle with students. He is definitely happy with his experience so far as a non fellow. There is plenty out there, perhaps non fellow students just have to take more initiative to go and get the opportunites!
Thanks! My daughter did contact them and they were kind enough to change her interview to the 20th. She is actually leaning towards Emerson right now, but I am secretly hoping this visit will sway her towards Elon. Would love to have an excuse to escape the cold northeast winter in February.
Has anyone heard about the Jane M Baird Pre-Med Scholarship? I was rejected from the Elon College Fellows program, but today I was accepted to the health professions cohort. I am very excited but am wondering when the Baird scholars will be notified. Also, congrats to everyone who has been admitted to Elon! My sister loves it so much. If you have any questions please PM me. For reference, my sister is in greek life & studies environmental science & political science, in case you had any questions specific to that.
So they have TAâs at Elon? Do they help teach the course, or do some actually teach courses on their own?
