Emerging Scholars Program

So I got this in the mail and am considering it. It will allow me to meet professors and faculty and learn more about the campus and research. Also it will allow me to take 6 credits toward my UG degree. Math 120 and English 149. Will get $3000 stipend for it, so I will not work over the summer.

It does require some things like workshops and monthly meetings after the summer along with other meetings like with emerging scholar advisers.

It is full time-About 9-5 each day over the summer six weeks. Does this sound beneficial? I just hope the meetings don’t take up a lot of time during the year, but taking the classes now seem worth it.

This looks like a valuable experience, and its tuition free, and you get payed to do it, WOW! for certain sign up. It wll lessen the stress of freshman year since you will have two courses completed, give you $3000 in your bank account if you can live at home, and participate, and you will meet professors and have small class sizes for these first two college classes, and get four years of mentoring and advisors. Even if you have to live on campus for this, and pay for that from the $3000 stipend, it is a good deal I bet. Good luck, hope you decide to participate.

I decided that I will apply next week, seems like it could be a fun experience if I utilize what I am given well. I think I’ll be at home since it didn’t say anything about housing, but I’ll contact them on Monday before I apply about details.

Sounds like a great program! All that extra support can only be good.

Yeah I already applied and emailed back a question I had. Seems like a good idea and currently no summer plans so I hope to be selected.

So I got in, its been 3 weeks and I feel like I’m struggling. I mean I have Bs in both classes but barely. The precalc class is taking up like 4 hours of hw a night and am now realizing that high school didn’t really teach me any of this

Like wow, I knew Case was a hard school but just having 2 classes has been difficult not sure how falls going to go.

Been going to office hours each day and still ended up with a C on first exam. Well on to doing hours of homework, sleep and back to start the day again in the morning.

Already debating if I should’ve gone to a different school.

@JadeRock Please hang in there and give CWRU a try for one year. This is good that you are getting a good rigorous precalculus class. That will make your next math classes easier by far. Summer school is tough because its compressed. You will get better at efficiently studying and your writing will improve. Its not really about getting As necessarily either. Bs at Case are like As elsewhere. Employers know this. Also, don’t overload in the fall, take three to four classes tops. I think the SAGES classes have fun books to read and are going to be easier to earn As. You will get some As at CWRU as you adjust to the level of work required. You are getting a good education. Be sure to take some breaks and have some fun.

You can always decide to transfer to Ohio State, or Cleveland State, if its not the right school for you, but hang in there for now. You are going into fall semester better prepared than you would have without the Emerging Scholars Program.

Nicely said, @Coloradomama . Another “you can do it” from another Case parent, @JadeRock ! Wishing you the best.

To add to everything else said one thing that might help is that there are several larger classes (not sure which ones but several stem classes) that will be recorded so you can view the class again to refresh your memory. Don’t use this as a chance to skip classes but rather to supplement your learning.

And there is abundant support from tutors. Be sure to balance the type of classes so you don’t have several labs or all courses that are writing classes.

CWRU has several videos that they produce for incoming freshmen that will discuss many concerns you might have. You can wait till they produce new ones or look at you tube for older videos.

Keep at it and stay positive. Good luck.

On YouTube search for cwru freshman registration and it is broken down inton the various disciplines.

I think all of you are correct, I need to relax and stay calm I mean it’s only been a few weeks. I should just try and stay positive and relaize that I may not be able to ace everything, but should just keep trying.

Glad to hear that @JadeRock. You will feel more and more comfortable as you gain more experience in college. Also, when the new kids get on campus, you will feel very confident, knowing your way around, knowing the library resources, and where to find the best snacks on campus. It will feel different once all the other freshmen get there.

Also remember that regular classes are over 15 weeks…I am not sure how many weeks your summer classes are. If they are 8 weeks then they go at twice the pace! But the best thing is you are learning how to study and how to use office hour. Also form a study group and/or get a tutor if necessary!

It’s six weeks so about 2.5 times the pace. There is a TA I can go to for help, formed a study group already. I’m still a little confused on how to really study. I feel like I think I could retain info better, but am unsure how. I guess by doing the above things.

Many students struggle with the change of pace from high school to CWRU undergraduate classes, so you are not alone.

As others here mentioned, the short duration of the summer program means much more information is packed into a shorter time period than during the regular semester.

I would also recommend reaching out to Dr. Haynesworth or Arthur Evenchik from the Emerging Scholars program. They can provide advice and guidance.

Educational Services for Students (ESS) has many programs to help CWRU students adjust how they study, prepare for class, etc. Many CWRU students have benefited from the ESS programs:

Remember that there are many people at CWRU ready to help you succeed in academics and other things.
