If you choose Emory over JHU for International Studies than honestly you either have people giving you bad academic advice or someone is just ■■■■■■■■. There is a reason why JHU is considered world renown for it. The poly sci dept at JHU where the IS major is housed is beyond superb.

BlueJayBJ: JHU is superior in IR, so I’m definitely applying, but I’ll probably apply to both. The location of JHU is better, but I think Emory might be slightly more generous with financial aid. I don’t know that for certain, though. I’ll apply and hope that I’m accepted. :)

I may be biased, but are you seriously accusing me of ■■■■■■■■ even though I said JHU is much better for IS? I just said that it is much better, but attending here clearly won’t banish her to incompetence. To essentially say that it does is ■■■■■■■■. I’m thinking that while IS isn’t but so strong here, Polisci is extremely strong. If she doesn’t get into JHU, Brown, GT(Georgetown), wherever, or can’t attend for w/e she will be much better than okay if she attends here. It’s not like she’ll have to kiss her dreams goodbye as your statement would imply. The accomplishments of alumni prove that to be the case. Their accomplishments may not be as pronounced/visible as GT or JHU, but they are far beyond commendable. I assure you she’ll survive and won’t be in a bad academic position. That’s all that I was saying. In the spirit of realism, one is more likely to get into Emory than Brown, JHU, or even GT (I explained GT’s arduous admission process to Hello. That’s why I said even. Reality is that their incoming stats. are identical to Emory, but the admissions is still brutal) for that matter. Once she gets into those schools, I gladly advise her to attend any of those 3 (her top choice is Brown I guess)or Tufts over Emory. Until then, Emory is nowhere near a horrible place, albeit not as great as those options for IS. It certainly shouldn’t be ruled out app. wise, especially considering the ME part.

Bernie12: I know your post was directed at the previous poster, but I’m definitely applying to Emory. It’s a great school and it’s not going to hurt to apply. At least Emory has an IS department. I don’t even think Princeton has one. That surprised me, but Princeton’s too good for me. I like quirky schools. At Brown, there’s a joke that once there was a class called psychoceramics - the study of cracked pots. I think that’s hilarious!

“Princeton is too good for me”

Don’t sell yourself short like that. Just simply say, “they don’t have my major.” I’m sure there are plenty of people at Princeton or anywhere(especially elites) who said before applying: “This school is too good for me”.

Bernie12: Also, I know Emory has a virtual tour of the campus on their site, but I felt like it didn’t cover everything. Should I try Flickr? I doubt I’ll be able to visit, so I just want to see what the whole campus looks like.

I looked at their YouTube channel. I know they probably did this for fun, but they had videos analyzing movies like Harry Potter and X-Men. I thought that was pretty cool. :)

Bernie12: You’re right. I guess I didn’t mean that. The competition is crazy on here. The people’s stats are unbelievable…

Yeah, I don’t think it has my major, but I could’ve overlooked it.
