Hello! I'm a high school junior who would like to major in English but who is also considering a double major, minor, or major in International Relations. I'm looking for a college with a laid-back and socially stimulating atmosphere where people learn for the sake of learning more than for the sake of making money. Neither Georgetown nor JHU is my top choice, but I want to apply to one of them.

I cannot visit either before applying because of other circumstances, but I have spent a night in Baltimore before and traveled around Washington several times already, and I think I like both areas.

Given the above information, which college do you think I should apply to?

First of all Johns Hopkins does not have an IR degree we have an international studies degree which is similar but has a tad more econ involved in it. If you go to Georgetown for IR you will not be able to do a double degree in the arts and science school. The Walsh school is a highly structured program.

Thanks for the information, BlueJayBJ.

In general, if I want to study English but have strong interest in politics and languages (e.g. the concept of international relations if not the program itself), would JHU or Georgetown suit me better?

If you go to Georgetown, you can’t study English AND IR. You can do one or the other, or combine English with Government (a completely different program at Georgetown) but if you do English you can’t do IR. This was one of the main reasons I chose JHU over Georgetown.

Does anyone else have more information on the strength of JHU vs. Georgetown humanities, particularly English?

Hopkins is the far better choice. It has a much higher ranked English department than Georgetown, and one of the best undergraduate writing seminar programs in the country. The International Studies program is also very prestigious. There are literally no (with the exception of BME) serious restrictions on what you can study at Hopkins, it’s very similar to Brown with just a few requirements.

That made me glare! If you want to study English & IR, both should be on your list. That said, I love Georgetown, it’s a heavenly environment, but I’ve never seen it mentioned in the top rank of English departments.

Yes you can. You can take classes in both fields.

yes, but s/he wants to major in one and minor in the other. this is impossible.
