i heard emory is more of a balanced school academically and socially than rice. what do u think?

considering both schools pretty seriously. not sure which one to choose.

Emory has more kids from the Northeast, it has a Greek scene. Rice (where I currently am) does have a social scene, just not a Greek one. You'll find that socializing in both places revolves around alcohol. I don't think that Emory is more balanced academically: Rice has 1/3 engineers, 1/3 natural sciences (premeds) and 1/3 humanites/social science. Emory has a reputation of being a school where most of the freshman class is premed.

"Balanced socially" can mean quite a few things. Do you mean a frat scene? Emory has one. A big city nearby? Check. A larger group of diverse students? We've got that too.

As for the comments made by trxgr6, it is true that a lot of students are pre-med here. However, pre-med does not guarantee a science major. I think that Emory could be described as a pre-professional school (it is a research institution, not liberal arts). So, compared with Rice, it comes down to your preferred mix of career students. Emory will not have many engineers, instead, there will be a lot of pre-law and pre-business.

Emory by far... 26% acceptance rate... B-School is 4th in the nation... A half billion dollars in monetary donations made to the school this year... 8th largest endowment which means the school will only improve..

In addition, the kids here are the "normal" smart type kids. Very social atmosphere compared to other academically similar colleges.

Emory will be top 10 in 2-3 years IMO

I agree with all of this except maybe the top 10 ranking. It's going to be very difficult to go top 10 without an engineering school within 2-3 years. Maybe in 10 years, but not 2-3.

Emory is definitely the kind of school with very socially gifted and academically intelligent kids. The kids at Emory were not only among the top of their class in HS, but also very sociable. The frat scene is great.
