Emory Scholars Applicants

So the application was due for consideration for Emory’s Scholars program so I thought I might as well start a thread so we can wait this one out together

Talk it up

I applied ED1 and checked the Scholars box. Fingers crossed for everyone!

I applied RD
Does anyone know when we find out if we made the program??

Applied EDII.

@Brownhead
The Emory website states that the nominees will be notified in early February. However, in some threads from last years, supposedly some people heard about their nomination on December.

You will be emailed and asked to submit an essay for the scholars program in late December. In February they will notify you if you are chosen to go to the scholars weekend, which is usually late February early March. You will then be told if you are a going to be a scholar. So that way, if you are a scholar you automatically learn of your decision at least a month before the actual notification day for RD

So, I sent my application for Emory Sunday to be considered for the Scholars program. I got a notification from common app saying that the application was completed and successfully sent, but I haven’t gotten any notification or email from Emory. Is this normal? Should I send them an email to make sure they received my application?

@CrystalYKim it’s very normal. They are processing a lot of docs so be patient and they’ll let you know when they have everything sorted out. But make sure that you double check what docs they say they’ve gotten because mistakes can happen.

What do you think the largest factors affecting it will be ? I think it will be ACT + need.

@cappex I didnt think need was a factor in this? I think it’s merit. I would think it would be SAT/ACT + intellectual depth/merit that would contribute to the school

I would agree with @ismitah

so with a 31 is there hope?

Yes…depends on the depth that goes with it. Emory isn’t a public school fellowship/honors program so isn’t merely trying to boost its 75%. There are also things called transcripts and other standardized tests that are subject based (AP/IB/A-level, SATII’s) to display academic distinction.

We should get our decisions by February 6. So there is a possibility that we find out before that.

Hi everyone,

I’m a current Emory Woodruff Scholar.

First of all, they tell you early Feb or late January. That’s because they have to know who will be coming, etc, to plan the event. A lot goes into it and the logistics are very complex.

Apart from that… to be honest, the idea of ‘merit’ for the Emory Scholars Program is entirely different than other colleges. You are used to that person who was SC president with a bunch of activities and good standardized testing scores, or a similar formula, to be accepted to Ivy Leagues and earn big scholarships like this one. Yet at Emory the process is truly holistic.

That is to say that, based on the information I’ve been told by Admissions, the Scholars Program has a selection committee of their own. It first goes through a bunch of people to see if the applicants scores AND grades are good enough to be an Emory student. That means that even if you’re in the lowest 25th percentile for SAT or ACT, you can still be considered if you have a good transcript. Then, they sort of tell the committee “Don’t look at the scores, we already saw that. They are good enough. Now look at the person.”

The way they look at the applicants then is through a mix of the Emory values and a little something of their own that they offer. Who is going to promote a community of care? Who is going to be welcoming and a good, true-to-themselves example?

Of course, the latest pool of scholars have amazing achievements but what is really special even as a community of scholars is that these students are people who have a heart, who have intellectual inquiry, who are creative in their own way (can be in the arts, in research, in the way they see the world), who show very mature communications skills, etc.

Then the interviews are there to really look at you and see if the potential they saw in paper is also present in the real person.

So your application should really just constantly show boiling potential. A person who knows who they are even though they know that will change. Show someone who, even though is afraid to tackle themselves, acknowledges that they have to to grow.

Truly, Emory Scholars are passionate individuals. They might not be the best in their academics or the best in their activities or the best leaders at all. They might be just those people who are boiling with the values they are looking for and Emory would love to have them and invest in such potential.

Wow thanks for the info!!

If it isn’t too much could u maybe post ur stats and extracurriculars, or what you think you did to get in as a scholar? Thanks a ton anyway!

@obandkewk123 Thanks for the insight! It’s always nice to hear from someone who has had first hand experiences. Thank you!

I am applying to emory, REG decision though. I mean i’m worried about my test scores/gpa. They are solid, but nothing extraordinary

Last year, decisions were released on OPUS on January 29th. Even if you didn’t make the cut for Emory Scholars, Oxford Scholars, or Goizueta Scholars but made the cut for receiving an Emory Merit Achievement Award ($18,000/year) or an Emory Liberal Arts Scholarship ($20,000/year), then you should be notified by early February if you applied by the Scholars deadline. I was surprised to have been notified at that time because I thought that my stats were a tad low for Emory in general (30 ACT, 1900 SAT) but I received an Emory Merit Achievement Award to Oxford College and I was also accepted to Emory College. Don’t be too stressed about the anticipation of waiting to see your Scholars decision because you’re worried about your stats or some other piece of your application. You could be lucky like me! Good luck, everyone!

I was accepted to both Oxford and emory college ED1 earlier this week and my deadline to choose one college and pay the deposit is the 15 th of next month. I also chose to be considered for scholars. So what happens if I am offered a merit scholarship to the college i didn’t choose?

As far as I know, the scholarships are not transferrable between Oxford and Emory and vice versa. My acceptance letter said “…you are one of the few students selected to receive an Emory Merit Achievement Award (EMAA), ** contingent on enrolling at Oxford College **.” I hope you get a scholarship to whichever college you are most interested in.
