Emory Scholars Essay Prompt

I recently got through figuring out a bungled nomination process by my guidance office, but still won't be able to get my hands on the actual nomination for another week or so. Could someone tell me verbatim the essay prompt/length this year? Thanks in advance.

"Write a brief essay (750 words) about yourself, focusing on one or two of your principal intellectual interests. Try to give the selection committee a sense of how these interests enhance your life and how they relate to your other interests or activities."

Good luck! I'm applying too :)

Good luck to everyone applying for Emory Scholars. My D is a freshman who went through the process and received a nice scholarship. She loves Emory and I can't wait to visit her in a few weeks. I'll keep an eye on the ESP posts and chime in with help when I can offer some. It's a great program.

Seems like a pretty broad topic ... does anyone have a clue as to how heavily the essay is factored into the selection process?

Hi,
Would you mind giving us an idea of your daughters stats and what percent tuition assistant she received?

They've used that same question for at least 5 years now. I wouldn't worry all that much about the essay. I wrote it the night before and got 2/3 tuition from Emory. Best of luck to all of you. I graduated from Emory in May 2007 and really enjoyed it.

If you use the search function, you can come up with lots of ESP posts with stats from last spring or previous years. At the info session I attended last spring when Scholars weekend was taking place, they said that average UW GPA of finalists was 3.9 and I believe math and verbal SAT average was at least a 1500. Once you make it to finalists weekend, I think you are assured at least full tuition but may get a full ride (tuition, room, board and fees). I think they generally offer about 30 of the full rides, but some are restricted to Georgia (or maybe even Atlanta) residents. Once you make it finalist weekend, I think your stats are irrelevant -- everyone there is equally eligible for the full ride and I think the decision is much more subjective at that point.

I could be off on this, but I think the ESP consists of almost 200 offers each year, which means there are many partial scholarship available. I don't know with the average stats are overall for the ESP.

On the essay, my D wrote more about the overall feel of Emory and why it was a perfect match for her. I don't really think it matters whether you are general or focus on one particular draw as long as it sounds like you are serious about Emory. Especially for finalists, they are looking for people who might actually end up at the school. Among finalists, my D said that about 1/2 of the kids ended up at Emory. Those who pass up the full ride ended up at Ivies or at other top U's with good scholarships.

D said a freshman just last week transferred into Emory from Harvard and they still gave him his scholarship. Apparently he was miserable with his choice (don't know any particulars) and really felt like Emory was a better school for him. The ESP folks helped him make it work. THey have been wonderful with us too in working out issues with D's medical disability.

Probably too much disorganized info in this post -- but the search function will also yeild a lot of info for everyone interested.

I wanted to post a separate item on filing the application. Last year it was clear that they wanted everything in one package -- application (whether the Emory ap or printed copy of the common ap, teachers' recs, GC form, transcripts and anything else I'm forgetting. D's GC actually called down to ck on this since it was her school's policy not to do this. GC had to get special permission from head counselor to take application from D to mail with the package. Even with all that, something was missing, but Emory was great at following up and letting us know what else was needed.

If you have any question, call or have GC call the ESP office -- they are beyond helpful!

Good luck.

CollegeX5...your information is great!

Our admission rep said the school or common application (including essays and recs) did not have to be sent with the emory scholar application, essay and recommendations.

it's best if it is
