julien,
the comments i suggested were meant to be an intro paragrph to the revised essay–not the essay itself.
ok?

wow sherbear, that’s a lot of input and you’ve certainly given me a lot to think about; thanks! that “new” essay does seem like a good idea, which I’ll definitely take into consideration.

there were some things in your analysis that I’d like to clarify, though. concerning APs, I’ve had the most rigorous course-load each year since freshmen year. including this year, I’ve totaled 8 APs.
I also showed a lot of interest in the school, including a visit, e-mail with admission office, website, recommendation from counselor, and knowing a student. although this doesn’t technically count as “interest,” I also have called the admission office and spoken to an officer to switch my app from RD to EDII, so at least someone knows my voice.

u r welcome.
u didn’t list ap scores, so i had no idea.
do u have a together gc who will advocate for u?
do u know the rep for ur specific area?
ur gc should contact the rep specifically and have the rep explain where, if anywhere, the committee found ur file lacking.
in regards to the essay:
study emory well. look at the course offerings, the profs, what they’ve published, what the kids have to read in a few different courses. be able to say how dr. blah blah has made an aname for herself in field, and how her course on delves into ______, an specific interest area for u, etc.
if ur francophone status is a plus, play on it.
look at the french department, its profs, its courses, and talk about what u could bring to some of those discussions.
if an invitation to attend emory does not result, u will have learned how to really go after something that’s important to you.
it’s a win win

again, all great suggestions that I’ll do my best to follow-through on.

you clearly have an excellent understanding of this process; congrats on your son’s acceptance!

i appreciate you kind words.
i really wish the best.

Where is it referenced that EMORY admissions will even consider additional info/stats for wait listed applicants, especially prior to the regular decision announcement date? How many were actually admitted from the waitlist in 2007?

in julien’s case, where his gpa and course rigor are on target, but his essays are only so-so, he has nothing to lose by submitting a revised essay with an explanation.
i have no reference info for you, as none has been released.
but if you had written a weak why emory essay, then the chances are that you didn’t put the time into researching the school or you didn’t put sufficient energy into searching/conveying your own thoughts.
knowing your own thoughts and/or knowing a lot about the school are, in my view, worthwhile endeavors.
it was just an opinion./suggestion.
had julien said he wanted to blow emory off, i would not have made such a suggestion.
being waitlisted is not pleasant.
you’re in limbo.
you could hang out on cc and commiserate with others; but after venting, you could channel you r energy into a revision.
emory will take it and at minimum, place it in your file.
just a thought.

JASMAC: According to the 2006-2007 CDS noone was admitted from the waiting list..Not sure about last year…But there has been discussion on other forums and at other comparable schools about increased use of waitlists this year…

I know someone who was admitted after being wait listed, albeit a number of years ago… I think the idea of re-writing essays, obtaining extra recs, and writing a personal letter to Emory is the way to go…

Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I loved Emory. It was a reach but I got in by making sure the school knew it was my first choice and doing everything in my power to make myself the best applicant for the school. Dpnt be intimidated by guidance counselors and books, do what you want and the most important person to listen to is yourself.
