I cannot decide between Emory and Harvard. I received a Robert Woodruff Scholarship (full ride) from Emory but I have also been accepted to Harvard. I am currently waiting for my final financial aid package from Harvard so I do not know what the total cost will be yet. Without going into great detail, as with a lot of people, the cost is important. Even though Harvard is ...what can I say...it's Harvard, I know there would be a lot of opportunities available to me at Emory. There have been quite a few people that have assumed because I was accepted at Harvard, naturally, that is where I will go. This has happened a lot from my teachers (several that graduated from the Ivies) and would be surprised, to say the least, if I turn Harvard down for Emory. Am I crazy for considering Emory over Harvard? Also, I currently plan on majoring in Chemistry with the intent of either going to Dental School or into research. I'm really confused.

Go to Harvard because I don’t want you as competition in my Chemistry class. ;)

Actually, I already know of one girl who turned down Harvard for Emory as well.

I’d wait for your Harvard financial aid, though.

What’s her major?

I’d choose harvard, you would have an easier time getting into dental school or any grad school for that matter…

Not so fast, a Harvard kid could be in the top of the class at Emory which will look better.

I don’t think anyone can be a great help with this unless they’ve been in a similar situation. All I can say is that there are many people at Emory (Woodruff scholars like yourself) who made the same decision are are happy with their choice to attend Emory. Since cost is an issue, it’s certainly worth a good look with all of the perks of being a scholar (classes, housing, research opportunities etc.).

you will get an excellent reputation at both, harvard is supposed to be a little better with helping get a jump start in grad school or the job market (very strong alumni ties) but go where you feel you fit the best

harvard just for the fact that you could say you went to harvard

Have you thought about Vanderbilt?

I also received the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship but I am more impressed with Emory.

If you don’t like Harvard, you can transfer to Emory. May not be so easy the other way. If you can swing it financially, I’d at least give Harvard a try.

Choosing Harvard because it’s “Harvard” is not a great reason. Weigh the benefits of both (financial, academic, etc.) and come to a reasoned decision, whatever it might be. Good luck.

If you are getting significant financial aid from Harvard, then your decision is not quite like the decisions of others in the vein of “full ride at Vandy/Duke/UNC/Emory vs. full pay at HYPS”. The financial decision might come down to $10,000/yr vs. $0/yr. Only you know how much of a burden $10,000/yr is to your parents, but it does seem like not that much debt…although of course professional school costs loom.

Wait, what was your question…are you crazy for considering Emory…you haven’t really told us what you like about Emory apart from it’s cheapness. It probably won’t be that much cheaper than Harvard, so my answer would be, yes, you’re crazy.

However, if there are other things you prefer about Emory (you mention opportunities, but wouldn’t you have plenty of them at Harvard as well?), then maybe they justify your decision.

Endicott transferring to Harvard is impossible.

If you transfer to Emory, would you still get that full ride?

Endicott said that if the OP didn’t like Harvard, he could transfer to Emory. Not the other way around.

Endicott

I just said it was not only not easy, it was impossible.

oh my bad, sorry

No problem :)
